Remote Musicologist-in-Residence / Musicologue en résidence

Role Description:

The Musicologist-in-Residence is a 2-year part-time contract positio n ideal for musicology doctoral students and recent graduates who have an interest in public musicology. The aim of the role is to broaden the public’s knowledge of the AMP-winning works and the importance of contemporary concert music, as well as act as the in-house expert on current and past AMP laureates. The Musicologist-in-Residence will work internally to document the creation of the new commissions, and work with the AMP team on educational initiatives, events, articles, content and promotional campaigns surrounding the AMP works and laureates.

 

Key Responsibilities


  • Act as in-house musicologist and expert on the laureates’ works.

  • Follow and document the development of the AMP-winning works, through direct communication with the composers, working closely with staff, juries and Advisory Council members.

  • Attending relevant milestones such as rehearsals, performances, and recordings at the discretion of the AMP staff.

  • Strategize large-scale narratives around the works in terms of education.

  • Facilitate or undertake interviews with composers for a variety of scholarly and public applications, written, recorded, or filmed.

  • Create program notes for the laureates’ works.

  • Compile and edit text and translations for each of the Prize-winning works including commissioning translations, if required.

  • Edit laureate biographies and write work descriptions.

  • Write liner notes for commercial recordings of the prize-winning works, as required.

  • Create contextual briefs on each of the laureates and their works for key stakeholders.

  • Write articles (public and/or scholarly) on the topic of the laureates, the Prizes, and the prize-winning works.

  • Host educational events such as the Gala Pre-performance talk, and the Meet the Laureates event.

  • Help facilitate the laureate masterclasses or lectures at universities.

  • Miscellaneous musicology research related to the Prizes and Laureates, as required.

  • Oversee the development of podcast episodes related to the laureates and the AMP-winning works.

  • Identify additional public musicology opportunities related to AMP.

  • Assisting with screening applicants in the 2028 Call for Proposals.

  • Keep up to date on new music, compositional practices, and report back with relevant trends, updates, or research.

  • Grow the academic network of the Azrieli Music Prizes.

  • Create a record of past laureates, their works, and relevant details (eg. program notes, scores, performance history)

  • Other duties related to the Azrieli Music, Arts and Culture Centre, as required.

 

Qualifications 


  • One or more degrees in the field of music and/or musicology, or equivalent.

  • Strong public speaking ability

  • Fluent spoken French and English required.

  • Strong written communication in either English or French; with a preference for entirely bilingual candidates.

  • A proven interest in public musicology.

  • Knowledge of contemporary concert music.

  • Self-directed with good time management skills.

  • Experience in interviewing, scholarly and/or public writing preferred.

  • Solution-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work in Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Planner, Outlook, etc.)

  • Fluency and ability to work with social media, including creating educational content, with minimal production support.

  • Residence in, or ability to travel to, Montréal, Canada for major AMP milestones including the AMP Gala in October, 2026.

Chosen candidates may be requested to provide a writing and recording (audio/video) sample that demonstrates their fluency in public musicology in either English or French.

Description du poste :

 

Le ou la musicologue en résidence occupera pour deux ans un poste à temps partiel, idéal pour les doctorants en musicologie et les jeunes diplômés qui s'intéressent à la musicologie publique. L'objectif de ce poste est d'élargir les connaissances du public sur les œuvres des lauréats des Prix Azrieli de musique (PAM) et sur l'importance de la musique de concert contemporaine, ainsi que d'interagir, en qualité d'expert interne, avec les lauréats actuels et passés des PAM. Le ou la musicologue en résidence travaillera à l'interne pour documenter la création des nouvelles commandes et collaborera avec l'équipe des PAM sur des initiatives éducatives, des événements, des articles, du contenu et des campagnes promotionnelles autour des œuvres des lauréats des PAM.

 

Responsabilités :


  • Agir en qualité de musicologue interne et expert des œuvres des lauréats.


  • Suivre et documenter le développement des œuvres des lauréats des PAM, en communiquant directement avec les compositeurs et en travaillant en étroite collaboration avec le personnel, les jurys et les membres du conseil consultatif.


  • Être présent pendant les étapes importantes, comme les répétitions, les représentations et les enregistrements, à la discrétion du personnel des PAM.


  • Élaborer, en matière d'éducation, des stratégies narratives à grande échelle autour des œuvres.


  • Faciliter les échanges avec les compositeurs dans le but de produire diverses applications savantes et publiques, qu'elles soient écrites, enregistrées ou filmées.


  • Rédiger des notes de programme sur les œuvres des lauréats.


  • Recueillir et éditer les textes et les traductions qui portent sur chacune des œuvres primées, y compris commander des traductions, si nécessaire.


  • Éditer les biographies des lauréats et rédiger les descriptions d'œuvres.


  • Rédiger des notes de livret pour les enregistrements commerciaux des œuvres primées, si nécessaire.


  • Créer des notes contextuelles, destinées aux principaux intervenants, sur chacun des lauréats et sur leurs œuvres.


  • Rédiger des articles (grand public et/ou universitaires) au sujet des lauréats, des prix et des œuvres primées.


  • Organiser des événements éducatifs tels que la conférence préconcert-gala et l'événement « Rencontre avec les lauréats ».


  • Aider à organiser dans les universités les classes de maître ou les conférences des lauréats.


  • Effectuer diverses recherches musicologiques liées aux prix et aux lauréats, si nécessaire.


  • Superviser le développement d'épisodes de balados consacrés aux lauréats et aux œuvres primées.


  • Repérer d'autres occasions de musicologie publique liées aux PAM.


  • Aider à la sélection des candidats dans le cadre de l'appel de propositions 2028.


  • Se tenir à jour en matière de musique et de pratiques compositionnelles et rendre compte des tendances, des nouveautés ou des recherches pertinentes.


  • Développer le réseau universitaire des Prix Azrieli de musique.


  • Créer un registre des anciens lauréats, de leurs œuvres et des détails pertinents tels que notes de programme, partitions et historique des représentations.


  • Autres tâches liées au Centre Azrieli de musique, d'arts et de culture, selon les besoins.

 

 

Qualifications requises :


  • Un ou plusieurs diplômes dans le domaine de la musique et/ou de la musicologie, ou l'équivalent.


  • Excellentes aptitudes à s'exprimer en public.


  • Maîtrise parfaite du français et de l'anglais à l'oral.


  • Excellentes aptitudes à la communication écrite en anglais ou en français ; une préférence sera accordée aux candidats parfaitement bilingues.


  • Intérêt avéré pour la musicologie publique.


  • Connaissance de la musique de concert contemporaine.


  • Autonomie et bonnes compétences en gestion du temps.


  • Une expérience en matière de communication orale et de rédaction scientifique et/ou publique serait un atout.


  • Sens de l'organisation.


  • Personne orientée vers les solutions et dotée de solides compétences interpersonnelles.


  • Capacité à travailler avec la suite Microsoft (Word, Excel, Planner, Outlook, etc.).

  • Maîtrise et capacité à travailler avec les réseaux sociaux, y compris la création de contenu éducatif, avec un minimum d'aide à la production.


  • Résidence à Montréal, au Canada, ou capacité à s'y rendre pour les événements majeurs des PAM, notamment le gala des PAM en octobre 2026.

Les candidats retenus peuvent être invités à fournir un échantillonnage d'écrits et d'enregistrements (audio/vidéo), en anglais ou en français, qui démontrent leur maîtrise de la musicologie publique.
