Youth Outreach Worker - Youth & Families
Permanent, Full-time, 35 hours/week
Bargaining Unit Position
This position carries responsibility for prevention, early intervention, program development and outreach services to at-risk youth and families. This position is responsible for reaching out to marginalized youth and providing information and referral to a range of community supports and services. This position is responsible for providing brokerage and advocacy and entails working collaboratively with youth, parents and community service providers in Eglington East/ Kennedy Park Communities.
Your Role
- Provides one-on-one support and informal Case management, advocacy, and referrals. Informs youth about community events such as job fairs, recreation programs and employment opportunities. Works collaboratively with school personnel to address issues of anger management, life skills, absenteeism, and academic performance. Prepares for workshops and activities. Collects information relevant to the needs of individual youth and works collaboratively with local service providers to ensure youth have access to programs. Responds to requests and inquiries from community groups. Engage youth to understand their needs, goals, aspirations, skills, and identify necessary services, while addressing barriers to access. Lead, develop, and implement community outreach activities in the Eglington East/Kennedy Park neighborhoods and target areas.
- Reaches out and establishes relationships with under-served youth in priority communities and identifies concerns and barriers that youth face in their respective communities. Supports local programs offered. Lead, develop, and implement community outreach activities in the Eglington East/Kennedy Park neighborhoods.
- Maintains statistics including service delivery, referrals and follow up.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with local community groups, service providers, and agencies through regular participation in community meetings, partnership in festivals and cultural events.
- Participating in trainings to ensure that service delivery remains relevant and up to date with the trends and issues faced by the community and youth.
- Takes all reasonable and necessary precautions to protect his or her own health and safety and that of co-workers by complying and demonstrating knowledge of the policies, procedures and safe practices established by Youthlink.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.

- Proactively and enthusiastically stays updated on best practices as it relates to Equity, Diversity and Belonging and organizational development. Works collaboratively with the ABR Committee and Director of Anti-Racism, Equity and Belonging to embed best practices into all programs, operational goals and processes.
- Development and Implementation of the Agency's Strategic Plan by participating in initiatives and committees to support the overall Plan.
What You Bring
:
- Undergraduate Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Degree / Diploma in Child & Youth Worker.
- Specialized training in CPI and CPR an asset.
:
- Two (2) years' experience working with youth engagement, community and program development and working successfully with community partners.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in working with marginalized youth, their families, newcomers and diverse youth populations living in under-served communities.
- Demonstrates a commitment to inclusiveness diversity and anti-oppressive practices
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and the Stages of Change theory and specific issues related to at risk youth.
- Understanding of the complex issues facing our clients
- Appreciation of the importance of engaging youth and families from a trauma-informed strengths-based relationship-based approach
- Sensitivity to and ability to work with a diverse client and staff group
- Sound knowledge of the issues facing priority neighbourhood communities in Scarborough
- Knowledge of relevant community resources.
- Operating using an Anti-Black Racism lens is an asset.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate in both official languages and/or other languages is a definite asset
- Ability to exercise professionalism and sound judgment in conflictual and stressful situations
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Strong administrative and organizational skills
- Completion of required suicide prevention and intervention training
- Flexible person, team player who has strong organizational skills, time management skills, the ability to multi-task, shift priorities, handle interruptions and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated proficiency in the range of Microsoft Office products (intermediate Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet mandatory. Proficient and accurate keyboard skills.
- Ability and discretion to maintain sometimes delicate and confidential information.
- Attention to details and high level of accuracy

- Police Vulnerable Sector Check required.
- This position requires evening and occasional weekend hours. There are some risks involved in this position such as crisis management. Minimal travelling required.
- To some extent, this position requires walking within the community.
