The Program
The Indigenous Relations department is committed to Truth and Reconciliation. The department emphasizes building strong and empowering relationships with the children, young people, and families who are Indigenous. To ensure practice engages the community and aligns with Indigenous worldviews, the department facilitates cultural practices in all aspects of service delivery in the Agency. The team work to enhance culturally responsive practices in the programs, providing direct teachings and sharing knowledge to program staff, and facilitating cultural activities for the young people. The overarching goal is to enhance our practice approach by connecting Indigenous children, young people and families to their First Nation culture and communities. The team work with a network of Treaty 7 Elders to continue to build relationships and the vision for the department.
As a member of the Indigenous Relations team, you will be expected to provide support within all the programs at Hull Services.
The Position
We are looking for a regular, full-time Cultural Facilitator . The schedule for this role is mostly Monday to Friday and requires a willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include non-structured work week including evenings and weekends when necessary.
Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Relations, the Cultural Facilitator works in collaboration with program staff, Elders, and Hull Services’ Elder to support the young peoples and families in strengthening their awareness and understanding of their cultural heritage and resources.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Work with programs to enhance young peoples/family’s awareness and understanding of their cultural heritage
- Engage and build relationships with young peoples/families in one-on-one or group settings to support their development in understanding their cultural heritage and/or resources
- Provide cultural teachings and resources that are relevant to the young peoples/family’s cultural heritage
- Work with supporting staff and Hull staff in supporting young people and families with their cultural development
- Support Elders in their work related to cultural teachings and stories with young people and families
- Identify and make use of opportunities to draw parallels between Western and Indigenous cultural teachings in order to promote increased cultural understanding, such as the Truth and Reconciliation 94 Calls to Action
- Support Hull Services’ Elder with cultural ceremonies as required, both on and off
- Work with the Hull Services’ Elder, Indigenous Relations Director, and program Cultural Helpers
- Ensure support forms are completed
- Attend and actively participate in team meetings
- Maintain a continuous learning mindset and participate in ongoing professional development activities
- Perform related tasks and duties as required
- Support program participants in culturally relevant celebrations and gatherings related to healing
Qualifications And Skills
- Degree or diploma in Human Services or a related field
- At least 2 years of relevant experience
- Well-developed time management and communication skills
- Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills, and ability to manage multiple projects and tasks
- Demonstrated initiative and reliability
- Extensive knowledge of Indigenous culture(s)
- Extensive knowledge of intergenerational trauma — the causes and the impacts
- Open to participation in activities, ceremonies and practices to promote well-being and Indigenous culture
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse program in a non-Indigenous specific organization
- Understanding of or open to learning NMT and brain development concepts as it relates to trauma
- A solid network of relationships with other family-serving organizations, and the Indigenous community and resources
- Flexibility and availability for evening and weekend work
- A Police Information Check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment
- A Child Intervention Record Check
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and ability to drive Agency vehicles is preferred (min. 3 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license)
- Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Certified with CYCAA would be considered an asset
- Excellent interpersonal qualities including flexibility, effective communication and relationship building skills
- Demonstrated interest, commitment, consistency, and a high level of self-awareness, personal maturity and responsibility
- Ability to work independently and effectively with team
- Self-motivated, positive and ability to take initiative
- Cross cultural competence; knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the recommendations, goals and activities of the commission
