Supervisor - Clinical

Position Summary

Nodin’s Outpatient Mental Health Service (OMHS) assists persons who under serious distress have engaged in risky unsafe behaviours due to inability to cope as a result of immediate or historical factors. Using a multi-disciplinary team approach to care, clients are matched with supports to best address their issues/needs to enhance coping skills to deal more effectively with direct/ intergenerational trauma and life’s difficulties. The interdisciplinary team provides case management, cultural support and teachings, mental health counselling, substance use counselling, crisis management and safety planning, art therapy, psychological care etc. The Outpatient Service also has an On-Call Service which offers telephone support for clients to call outside of OMHS regular office hours Monday to Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 24 hours on weekends/statutory holidays.

The Supervisor - Clinical is a team member of Nodin’s Outpatient Mental Health Service (OMHS) who participates with supervisees to ensure welfare of clients are protected through integrity of clinical services, and supervisees impart and maintain clinical and ethical standards. The supervisor monitors, observes, mentors, coaches, evaluates, inspires, and creates an atmosphere that promotes self-motivation, learning, and professional development. Nodin Mental Health Services is a mental health resource for First Nation children, youth, adults and families from remote First Nations communities served by SLFNHA.

OMHS is one of Nodin`s services, a multi-disciplinary team which provides assessment, counselling, group work, crisis intervention and safety planning with individuals demonstrating high risk behaviours, serious emotional/behavioural disorders, and trauma symptoms. Individuals referred to the OMHS travel from First Nation communities for a short stay in Sioux Lookout to receive support from a multi-disciplinary team. This team includes a Clinical Manager, Admin Assistant, Receptionist/Scheduler, Clinical Supervisors, Mental Health Counsellors, Substance Abuse Counsellors, an Indigenous Cultural Support Worker, Clinical Assistant, Psychologist, Expressive Arts Therapists, and Case Manager.

  Accountability

The Supervisor - Clinical is accountable to the Manager – Clinical, Outpatient Mental Health Service .

Qualifications

Education & Professional Credentials

• Bachelor’s degree in a core mental health discipline (e.g., social work, psychology) or closely related field from a recognized institution is required.


• Current registration in good standing with a regulated professional body authorized to practice psychotherapy in Ontario (e.g., OCSWSSW, CRPO, CPA) with authorization for independent practice is required.


• Completion of a minimum of 150 hours of clinical supervision, along with at least 30 hours of formal training in clinical supervision is required.

Professional Experience

• Minimum of five (5) years of experience providing mental health counselling is required.


• Demonstrated clinical experience working with children, youth, adults, and families.


• Experience supporting complex clinical presentations, including concurrent disorders, trauma, and high-risk behaviours.


• Previous supervisory and leadership experience is considered an asset.

Clinical Knowledge & Competencies

• Strong understanding of theoretical frameworks and principles underpinning mental health practice.


• Proficiency in clinical assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.


• Ability to maintain high standards of ethical and professional practice.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


• Strong problem-solving, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.


• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, adapt to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

• Ability to perform the duties of the position on a regular basis.

Cultural Competence & Community Engagement

• Knowledge of First Nations cultures, histories, and the social and geographic realities of northern communities.


• Experience working with First Nations individuals and communities is an asset.


• Ability to communicate in a First Nations dialect of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset.

Roles & Responsibilities

Clinical Oversight & Quality Assurance

• Monitor counsellors to ensure consistent adherence to organizational policies, standard operating procedures, clinical protocols, performance expectations, and productivity benchmarks.


• Review clinical documentation (e.g., session notes, assessments, interventions, and treatment plans) to ensure appropriate level and continuity of care.


• Ensure documentation meets established standards; provide timely feedback and address deficiencies.


• Oversee the provision of effective case management services.


• Ensure timely response, active clinical involvement, and thorough documentation for all high-risk cases.


• Maintain oversight of case files, ensuring legal and ethical issues are identified and addressed promptly.


• Maintain a tracking system for high-risk clients to ensure continuity and adequacy of service delivery.


• Maintain a tracking system for client discharges and ensure follow-up plans are implemented within required timelines.

Supervision, Coaching & Staff Development

• Conduct bi-weekly individual supervision meetings to review referrals and active cases, supporting accountability, clinical direction, and care planning.


• Ensure that clinical direction provided to supervisees is documented within the electronic health record system.


• Promote the development of counselling competencies through ongoing evaluation, feedback, and coaching.


• Support supervisees in applying best practices and developing innovative, client-centered interventions.


• Provide crisis intervention support and facilitate group debriefings as required.


• Deliver orientation and onboarding for new staff.


• Conduct probationary and annual performance evaluations.


• Identify staff training needs in collaboration with the Clinical Manager and Director; participate in training delivery as required.

Program Operations & Administration

• Schedule and coordinate the work of direct reports to ensure effective service delivery.


• Ensure adequate staffing coverage, including participation in recruitment and hiring processes.


• Collect and analyze service data against productivity, quality, and efficiency benchmarks.


• Prepare and submit supervision summaries and other required reports as needed (e.g., for funders and senior management).


• Participate in monthly staff meetings.


• Complete additional administrative duties as required.

Stakeholder & Community Engagement

• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with communities.


• Support the development and maintenance of community resource profiles.


• Review community mental health data to inform service planning and delivery.


• Support community-specific mental health programming.

Accountability & Leadership

• Maintain regular supervision with the Clinical Manager for consultation on supervisees, performance, and emerging issues.


• Submit required reports in advance of supervision meetings for review and discussion.


• Address staff performance and conduct issues, including documentation and implementation of disciplinary processes where required.
