Kevin French – Moving Towards A Well Deserved Retirement!
After 14 years of guiding us, mentoring us, and pressing air horns he absolutely should not have pressed, Kevin French is hanging up his hard hat, sort of. We’ll miss his thoughtful mind, his creativity and innovation, and most of all his infectious laugh. The good news is that he will continue to support us, working a day a week into the foreseeable future to guide and mentor us, assist with communication, and contribute to key projects and clients. This article is all about Kevin, as written by me, Bruce Tunnicliffe, the founder and president of VEI. I can’t express how much positive influence Kevin has had here at VEI. Kevin started his career in the 1980s and we first got to know him as a client (consultant) in the early 2000s. The more we worked together, the more he wanted to come “to the dark side”, as he lovingly calls contracting, and honestly, we’ve never looked back. The Force is strong with this one. VEI was only 9 years young when he joined us in the summer of 2012, and for the past 14 years he has helped to shape VEI in incredible ways! But we’re not the only one who have changed over time, check out Kevin back in the day. If you thought he was goofy back in the day, below is a picture of Kevin from 2015. He is with Patrick O’Neill, on a tie Wednesday (which ran for years and has just recently been resurrected) proudly showcasing our amazing pocket protectors. Nerds! His bold ties and shirts are part of who Kevin is. Perhaps almost as much a part of him as his natural curiosity. Check out the photo below, Kevin is with Iain Walton, and Iain and Kevin’s shirts could not be more different! This kind of loud, eye-catching shirt is what Kevin regularly wore to the office and to conferences. But what are we doing in these photos? What is Kevin so curious about? This was Monday August 21, 2017, the day a partial eclipse happened over our office. Unfortunately no one had solar glasses to watch it. So I headed to the grocery store, and through trial and error we made numerous cereal box pinhole projectors. Kevin is so enamoured with them that he is trying to take a photo of the partial eclipse being projected inside the cereal box. Haha. Those that know Kevin also know that he loves wine. He more than loves it, he is obsessed with it. He plans vacations locally, and around the world, to tour his favorite wineries. Kevin also loves researching and communicating the latest technical information. He presents at conference right across Canada and brings dry information to life with his insightful analysis and relaxed delivery. As an example of his lifelong passion for speaking on innovative remediation work, back in 1990 (22 years before he joined VEI), he gave a presentation entitled “ On-Site Treatment of Soils and Groundwater ” at “ The Canadian Institute Conference on The Clean-up of Toxic Real Estate, Industrial Plant and Natural Resource Sites ” (from today’s perspective, an ‘old’ name for a conference). Back in the early 1990s Dig and Dump ruled the soil remediation world, but Kevin was curious and discussed other solutions back in the day, he surely was an early innovator! While at conferences, Kevin also knows how to have fun, and boy we’ve had a lot of fun over the years. Speaking of communication and fun, Kevin regularly shares his vacation pics with us, oftentimes it includes him being…well Kevin! Here are a few sample pics. I could probably continue on for too long, so I’ll wrap it up with a few short Kevin stories and some quotes from those who work with Kevin at VEI. Quick-share Kevin moments: Lord French : Through an internet offer, Kevin came to own a 1 m by 1 m plot of land in Scotland. With it he received a framed certificate officially naming him a Lord. He hung this in his office. For nearly a decade here at VEI people would humorously call out to Lord French, and he’d regally answer. To this day, if you message or call “Lord French” he will absolutely respond. The Air Horn Incident : One day someone, we never found out who, placed an airhorn just out of sight inside our office. Kevin happened to notice it. Curiosity peaked, he picked it up and started asking about it. Marilyn, our patient but at times harassed office assistant, noticed what was occurring and loudly says “Kevin don’t press that!”. What does Kevin do? He presses it. The loudest indoor sound we’ve ever heard pulses through the office. Everyone stops working, chaos ensues. Kevin still tries to justify his actions to this day. He has not succeeded. The Babadook Joke : When Kevin found out I cannot handle horror movies, he asked me to watch the scariest movie that he had ever seen - The Babadook. I refused. Sometime later, he got me a DVD as a present where the outside was for another movie but inside was The Babadook DVD. I didn’t watch it. Even later, he goes to a print shop and prints a huge picture of the Babadook’s face, and when I’m not around one day he tapes it to the inside of my desk. It takes me a few days but I finally see it and scream out. Kevin loved it all. The DVD remains in my possession. I have not watched it. I will not be watching it. A few brief comments about Kevin from staff: “Kevin has been an invaluable mentor and a trusted sounding board” “I truly would not be where I am today without his guidance and support” “Kevin is an exceptional resource and a wealth of knowledge” “I firmly believe that VEI would not be as successful as it is today without Kevin’s vision and contributions.” In closing, Kevin, you will be greatly missed. The silver lining is that we’re looking forward to spending a few days a month with you. If you pour as much curiosity and passion into retirement as you have into your work here, your retirement will be extraordinary, and will probably involve a lot of wine. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Happy retirement, Kevin!
