Analyst Intern - Sustainability Engineering (18 months)

Job Summary

This is a unique opportunity to be exposed to different disciplines within the company and to gain international experience with Sustainability related topics, strengthen data and analysis skillset, and learn from various disciplines connected to Sustainability. By the end of your internship, you will have developed tangible Sustainability, planning and business skills that will help you get the most out of your final year(s) of university and set a meaningful foundation for your career post-graduation.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, our Analyst Intern - Sustainability Engineering will:

• Respond to a variety of internal and / or external requests, to compile data relevant for decision making and business case preparation. Topics could cover any of Kinross’ material sustainability topics and in particular those related to climate, energy, supply chain and human rights.
• Collect and analyze Sustainability data and research, summarizing findings in a structured format.
• Work collaboratively with site (including site travel as required), regional, and corporate teams.
• Participate in the development of communication materials to share progress and challenges with management as required.
• Support the sustainability reporting team as needed in preparation and review of annual disclosures.

Support business case development:

• Support the development of business cases for investment decisions, including preparation and/or validation of analysis to ensure accuracy, and considering their financial effects (actual and anticipated).
• As needed, work closely with the other teams in the Operations Strategy department (e.g., Strategic Business Planning, Technical Services, Energy) or other corporate functions (e.g., Finance, HR, Legal, etc.)

Work closely with the Operations and Projects Group in supporting operational demands and project studies:

• Works closely with key functional areas and others to map stakeholders and their interests and priorities with respect to Sustainability.
• Provide support in monitoring, understanding, and reporting on the current state and upcoming business priorities which may influence Sustainability matters. Support the annual review and update of sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities to determine key Sustainability areas of focus for Kinross.
• Provide analytical support and input into the assumptions used in project studies (e.g., mine opex, processing OPEX), relevant to sustainability topics. Perform internal and external benchmarking exercises to validate the reasonability of assumptions made.
• Work closely with the projects team in developing inputs for select sections of the studies required for project development
• Liaise with site personnel and outside consultants to perform reviews of the select sections of the studies.
• Support the Strategic Business Planning Process
• Perform reviews of GHG data (e.g., comparisons with previous years and forecasting), creating summaries of findings in presentations.
• Support with preparation of presentations and materials

Support technical evaluations of sustainability-related opportunities:

• Support the analysis of potential sustainability investment opportunities, including data review, benchmarking and financial modelling.
• As needed, work closely with the other teams in the Operations Strategy department (e.g., Strategic Business Planning, Technical Services, Energy) or other corporate functions (e.g., Finance, HR, Legal, etc.)

Qualifications and Skills

• Currently enrolled in the University of Toronto Master of Science in Sustainability Management Class or a 2nd - 4th year undergraduate student at a Canadian university. Applicants may come from any area of study.
• Applicants are encouraged to show their academic and non-academic experiences which have encouraged critical thought on topics related to dialogue, development, resource extraction, finance and sustainability, and improvement of community well-being

Skills

• Strong knowledge of data management, processing, and analytics across financial and other data types.
• Strong technical background, ideally in engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline
• Experience or demonstrated interest in the mining industry
• Energy-sector knowledge would be an asset
• Experience with data modelling, financial models, and forecasting
• Advanced Excel skills
• Attention to detail and commitment to deliver high-quality work
• Experience with GHG emission calculations
• Strong knowledge of data management, processing, and analytics across financial and other data types.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver commitments on time
• Strong academic performance with demonstrated quantitative skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Up to date knowledge about Sustainability, including key societal issues and how these affect the corporate sector
• Strong knowledge of socio-economic data analysis and graphics
• Language skills in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and/or Portuguese would be considered an asset
• Must have valid passport and be able to travel internationally
• Ability to travel outside Canada to all Kinross mine sites (as the intern can expect to participate in several site visits with our Manager, Sustainability Assurance)
