Position Summary
This is a high-travel, field-based CDL driving position requiring travel throughout Canada for extended periods (3-4 months at a time). The CDL Driver operates specialized rail inspection vehicles, supports testing operations, and ensures compliance with all DOT and safety regulations.
The location shown in this posting is used for recruiting purposes. This role is field-based and requires extensive travel to multiple job sites, which will be the primary work locations.
Key Responsibilities
Travel & Work Environment
- Travel extensively (3–4 months at a time) within assigned regions
- Perform all work in the field in varied and sometimes extreme weather conditions
CDL Driving & Vehicle Operation
- Operate commercial vehicles (hi-rail trucks and rail-bound detector cars) on roadways and railroad tracks
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Maintain DOT compliance, including driver logs, inspections, and regulatory requirements
Inspection & Operations Support
- Assist with rail flaw detection testing and data collection
- Monitor and interpret data on onboard computer systems
- Perform ground-level rail inspections using handheld equipment
Maintenance & Equipment Care
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance (oil, fluids, filters, etc.)
- Assist with the repair and maintenance of the detector carriage and equipment
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the vehicle and equipment
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and DOT/FRA regulations
- Wear required PPE at all times
- Complete required training, including annual Road Worker Safety
Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate clearly with crew members via radio, intercom, and in-person
- Report safety concerns, equipment issues, and track conditions promptly
- Maintain professional relationships with railroad personnel
Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding role. Candidates must be able to:
- Climb steps/ladders frequently (up to 300 steps per day)
- Walk on uneven railroad surfaces
- Bend, kneel, squat, and crawl for extended periods
- Work in confined spaces (including under vehicles with ~18-inch clearance)
- Sit or drive for extended periods
- Lift up to 85 lbs., occasionally assist with over 100 lbs.
Sensory Requirements
- Vision: Ability to distinguish colors (red/green/yellow), read monitors, and meet DOT/FRA vision standards
- Hearing: Ability to hear verbal communication, alarms, and radio transmissions in a safety-sensitive environment
Basic Qualifications
- Valid CDL Class 5 or higher with air brake endorsement
- Ability to pass a health assessment, including a drug screen, audiogram, and physical abilities test, and background check (where permitted by law)
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Basic mechanical aptitude (e.g., changing tires, replacing batteries)
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
- Bilingual proficiency in French and English, a significant asset, Not a deal breaker.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of commercial driving experience
- High School Diploma or CAEC

Le chauffeur CDL est responsable de l’exploitation de véhicules spécialisés d’inspection ferroviaire, du soutien aux activités de détection des défauts de rail et du respect de toutes les exigences applicables en matière de transport et de sécurité. Principales responsabilitésDéplacements et travail sur le terrain
· Effectuer de nombreux déplacements dans les régions assignées du Canada pendant de longues périodes.
· Travailler dans divers environnements et conditions météorologiques, notamment la chaleur, le froid, la pluie, la neige et d’autres conditions extérieures.
· Séjourner à l’extérieur du domicile pendant de longues périodes selon les besoins opérationnels.
Conduite et exploitation de véhicules
· Conduire de façon sécuritaire des véhicules commerciaux, y compris des camions rail-route (hi-rail) et des voitures de détection circulant sur les voies ferrées.
· Effectuer les inspections avant et après utilisation conformément aux politiques de l’entreprise et aux exigences réglementaires applicables.
· Tenir à jour les registres de conduite, les rapports d’inspection et toute autre documentation requise pour assurer la conformité.
Soutien aux inspections ferroviaires
· Participer aux activités de détection des défauts de rail et aux inspections ferroviaires.
· Surveiller et interpréter les données générées par les systèmes d’inspection embarqués.
· Effectuer des inspections au sol à l’aide de l’équipement de détection désigné.
Entretien de l’équipement
· Effectuer l’entretien préventif de routine, notamment la vérification et l’ajout de fluides, le remplacement de filtres et d’autres tâches d’entretien de base.
· Participer au diagnostic, à la réparation et à l’entretien des équipements d’inspection et des systèmes de chariot détecteur.
· Maintenir les véhicules, l’équipement et les espaces de travail propres et bien organisés.
Santé, sécurité et conformité
· Respecter toutes les politiques de sécurité de l’entreprise, les procédures opérationnelles et les exigences réglementaires applicables.
· Porter et utiliser adéquatement l’équipement de protection individuelle (ÉPI) requis.
· Compléter toutes les formations, certifications et programmes annuels de sécurité exigés.
Communication et travail d’équipe
· Communiquer efficacement avec les membres de l’équipe, les superviseurs et le personnel ferroviaire.
· Signaler rapidement toute préoccupation liée à la sécurité, tout problème d’équipement ou toute condition inhabituelle de la voie.
· Maintenir des relations professionnelles avec les clients et les représentants des compagnies ferroviaires.
Exigences physiques
Ce poste exige la capacité de :
· Monter fréquemment des escaliers et des échelles (jusqu’à environ 300 marches par jour).
· Marcher sur du ballast, des traverses ferroviaires et d’autres surfaces irrégulières.
· Se pencher, s’agenouiller, s’accroupir, ramper et travailler dans des positions inconfortables pendant de longues périodes.
· Travailler dans des espaces restreints, notamment sous des véhicules avec un dégagement limité.
· Rester assis et conduire pendant de longues périodes.
· Soulever et transporter jusqu’à 85 livres de façon autonome et aider à manipuler des charges plus lourdes au besoin.
Exigences sensoriellesVision
· Capacité de distinguer les couleurs, notamment le rouge, le vert et le jaune.
· Capacité de lire des écrans, des instruments et de la documentation écrite.
· Capacité de satisfaire aux exigences visuelles applicables au poste.
Audition
· Capacité d’entendre et de réagir aux communications verbales, alarmes, signaux d’avertissement et transmissions radio dans un environnement où la sécurité est essentielle.
Qualifications de base
· Permis de conduire valide de classe 5 ou supérieure délivré par une province canadienne, avec mention frein à air lorsque requis.
· Capacité de réussir une évaluation médicale préalable à l’emploi, incluant un dépistage de drogues, un audiogramme, une évaluation des capacités physiques et une vérification des antécédents, lorsque permis par la loi applicable.
· Excellentes aptitudes en communication verbale et écrite.
· Aptitudes mécaniques de base permettant d’effectuer des tâches simples d’entretien de véhicules et d’équipement.
· Capacité de satisfaire aux exigences physiques du poste.
· Capacité et volonté d’effectuer de nombreux déplacements partout au Canada.
Qualifications souhaitées
· Deux (2) années ou plus d’expérience en conduite de véhicules commerciaux.
· Diplôme d’études secondaires, Certificat canadien d’éducation des adultes (CAEC) ou équivalent.
· Expérience préalable dans les secteurs ferroviaire, du transport, des services sur le terrain ou dans un environnement industriel.
