What You’ll Do

As Deputy City Manager, you will serve as a key member of the City’s leadership team, partnering with the City Manager, elected officials, community stakeholders, and departmental leaders to advance the City’s economic vitality and strategic priorities. Key responsibilities include:

– Leading economic development programs, initiatives, and partnerships that support business attraction, retention, and expansion.
– Developing and implementing strategic policies and initiatives that align with the City’s vision and long-term goals.
– Overseeing grant development, administration, compliance, and reporting to maximize external funding opportunities.
– Managing contract administration activities, including procurement coordination, negotiations, and performance oversight.
– Facilitating complex public-private partnerships and fostering strong relationships with business leaders, developers, nonprofit organizations, and community stakeholders.
– Supporting land use and development initiatives that promote sustainable economic growth and community investment.
– Coordinating cross-departmental projects and ensuring successful implementation of City Council priorities.
– Conducting research, analysis, and policy development to address emerging opportunities and challenges.
– Representing the City at community meetings, regional organizations, economic development forums, and business outreach events.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and results-oriented professional with a strong understanding of local government operations, economic development strategies, and community-building initiatives. Successful candidates will possess:

– Experience in public sector, local government, nonprofit, economic development, or related organizations.
– Knowledge of grant management, contract administration, budgeting, and strategic planning.
– Experience working with land use, development review processes, redevelopment projects, or community development initiatives.
– Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage elected officials, business leaders, developers, community organizations, and residents.
– Demonstrated success leading complex projects from concept through implementation.
– Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including policy development and public presentations.
– Experience in retail management, commercial development, business recruitment, or related economic development activities is highly desirable.
– The ability to navigate complex issues, build consensus, and deliver innovative solutions that advance community goals.

Qualifications

Education and Experience – Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

– Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business, retail management, public administration, or a related field.
– Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible administrative or staff experience in municipal government including two (2) years of management experience.

– Application Review – Submitted applications will be assessed based on job-related qualifications, including desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department. Candidates may be screened to identify those who are better qualified to proceed in the examination process.
– Panel Board Interviews – Those candidates identified as better qualified will be invited to the panel board interviews, tentatively scheduled for mid-October.
