Duties:

The position responsibilities include: Program Delivery and Logistics: (60%) The Public Education Coordinator will carry out programming for groups and on a variety of topics:

• Deliver STEM-based K-12 programs including all preparation and logistical requirements.
• Provide public and school tours of VIU Science and Technology facilities and coordinate exhibits at both the Nanaimo Campus and the Deep Bay Marine Field Station.
• Lead demonstrations and interpretive activities; maintain supplies and equipment for program activities.
• Provide information on activities and events; maintain social media sites, promotional materials and displays.
• Assist with off-site activities when required.

Program Development (20%) The Public Education Coordinator will develop programs, exhibits, events, and media in support of the STEMantics program:

• Develop programming for school and community groups that is consistent with VIU's Academic Plan and Science and Technology's Area Plan and meets K-12 curriculum-based learning outcomes.
• Develop public education programs and assets for the interpretation of STEM-based topics on both the Nanaimo Campus and Deep Bay Site.
• Assist with the development of opportunities to engage with groups and organizations that are consistent with the mission of VIU.
• Create interpretative materials, exhibits, signage, and media.

Program Coordination (20%) The Public Education Coordinator will:

• Assist with student and volunteer supervision, scheduling, and training and maintain appropriate quality standards for the STEMantics program.
• Create, update, and maintain the website.
• Maintain booking calendars, process registrations, respond to inquiries (phone, email, social media).
• Maintain a volunteer database, send monthly e-mails about volunteer opportunities, coordinate volunteers onsite and at events.
• Assist with collection, care and maintenance of display aquaria, touch tanks, and other educational assets.
• Manage the Point-of-Sale machine, manage a small selection of retail sales, and admission charges to events and facilities.
• Weekly reconciliation of sales and production of sales reports (training will be provided).

Required Qualifications:

B.Sc. in Biology, Marine Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, or equivalent from an accredited institution. Background in marine science and interpretation, with five years relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

• Experience with proposal writing, curriculum development and/or K-12 Education.
• Experience in the delivery of public education and K-12 programs.
• Understanding of BC curricula requirements.
• Experience maintaining social media sites.
• Experience in the development of interpretive material.
• Experience organizing and facilitating events.
• Experience developing presentations and good public speaking skills.
• Group management techniques.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Highly organized.
• Senior-level proficiency in word processing, MS Office and Excel programs, and the capacity to learn new software program.
• A clean Criminal Records Review Program Clearance satisfactory for working with children and vulnerable populations.
• A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).
• A valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate (or obtain as per CUPE Article 23.03 c)(may be obtained post-employment).
• The ability to work the occasional evening or weekend.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teachers diploma, degree or equivalent experience; or M.Sc.
