Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosauneeand the Wendat Peoples, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for two open rank positions, effective July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval. Applications from candidates who belong to equity-deserving groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidates will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity, and service duties while contributing to an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.
Candidates must hold a J.D. or LL.B. degree as well as either an LL.M. or a Master’s degree in a closely-related field. Preference will be given to those with either a doctoral degree in law, a Ph.D. in a closely-related field, or who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion.
Any appointment at a rank above the Assistant Professor will require the successful candidate to hold tenure at a recognized post-secondary institution along with demonstrated, established program of SRC and extensive relevant teaching duties.
Although we will review applications from scholars with varying strengths and areas of expertise, our school is particularly interested in scholars with expertise in Indigenous and Aboriginal law, constitutional law, civil procedure, tax law, bankruptcy and insolvency law, competition law, corporate law, commercial law, private international law, race and the law, and disability law. We are interested in receiving applications from scholars engaging in innovative research methodologies to contribute to expanding and diversifying our methodological capacities.
In addition, the successful candidates must present evidence of:
- a strong emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
- demonstrated potential for teaching excellence in the law school.
- a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
- an ability and willingness to contribute to the life and collegial governance of the Law School and the University through collegial service. With the School’s rapid growth in recent and future years, contributions to service and administration are valued, and thus we look for candidates with the interest and capacity to contribute in this manner.
Responsibilities include: contributing to our Juris Doctor program through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students; participating in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, research agenda, including pursuing innovative, independent research that produces cutting-edge high quality results; and participating in the academic life of the Law School and the University.

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca]. The salary minima for the Assistant, Associate and Full Professor ranks are $103,916.30, $131,194.32 and $150,029.14 per annum respectively. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

Lincoln Alexander School of Law
The Lincoln Alexander School of Law offers a Juris Doctor program to students of diverse backgrounds. Our Faculty prides itself on the excellence of its scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities, the quality of its teaching, and the depth of its community engagement. Lincoln Alexander Law has an outstanding reputation for scholarly work and an innovative teaching culture. It is one of only two law schools in the country to offer an Integrated Practice Curriculum that integrates lawyering skills in each year of the program, allowing our graduates to be licensed as lawyers without articling. The school’s community legal clinic involves students in legal advocacy on behalf of low-income residents in our community.
Lincoln Alexander Law is committed to advancing Indigenous legal education in Canada. The school’s Indigenous Legal Education Committee works with community partners to create opportunities for faculty, staff and students to engage in land-based learning. In addition to seeking to hire Indigenous faculty, this year the law school will be establishing a staff position for a Director of Indigenous Legal Education and Reconciliation. This Director will support the Dean and the senior administrative team in advancing the law school’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls for law schools to integrate Indigenous law and perspectives in its curriculum; advance the integration of Indigenous legal orders and perspectives in the Integrated Practice Curriculum; create new opportunities for students, while building partnerships with the community; work to create an atmosphere where Indigenous knowledge is privileged; and promote Indigenous educational pedagogies, research methodologies, and the importance of Indigenous perspectives.
