The successful applicant will be required to work in accordance with the BCGEU Collective Agreement as well as the applicable policies and procedures of Tla’amin Health and Tla’amin Nation. The successful applicant will be in good physical health. This position is open to applicants of all genders.
The Indigenous Supported Child Development (ISCD) Support Worker provides works with designated children 0-12 years of age to ensure their effective inclusion within Tla’amin Nation’s early childhood programs, preschool, and after-school programs. They provide one-on-one support to ensure that each child on the caseload receives care that promotes their learning. They work in collaboration with the ISCD Coordinator, parents/caregivers, early childhood education staff, team members, and relevant service providers/agencies to assist in developing and implementing an individual service plan to support children’s developmental needs in a culturally appropriate manner.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies and procedures as directed by the Position. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to citizens, clients, employees, and general matters of the Nation.
- Provide regular, direct, ongoing support to children and staff in the Nation’s early childhood programs, and possibly in school or after-school programs as directed by the ISCD Coordinator.
- Assist in the facilitation of regular sessions which gather children on their caseload in a group setting, providing activities to ensure children are interacting with peers, gaining social skills, and learning school readiness skills prior to entry into kindergarten.
- Participate in program planning.
- Provide personal care as needed (ie. toileting, dressing, etc.)
- Be responsible for the safe operational use and maintenance of adapted equipment.
- Maintain progress notes records and provide monthly summary reports.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Support traditional cultural teachings and practice for children to promote healthy physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual development.
- Provide supportive professional relationships with the parents, caregivers, and extended family of the children in the program.
- Attend and participate in meetings as directed.
- Attend in-service workshops and training as directed.
- Work collaboratively with the early childhood team.
- Participate as an active and supportive member of the early childhood team, assisting other staff in their roles as needed.
- Have awareness of the expectations and requirements of Childcare Program Licensing.
- Work within the ECEBC Code of Ethics.
Qualifications
- High school diploma + a minimum of two years post-secondary education in a related field (early childhood education, psychology, education, child and youth care, social work, etc.)
- A minimum of 3 years experience working with neurodiverse children
- Knowledge of typical and atypical childhood development
- Knowledge of ɬaʔamɩn cultural practices
- Knowledge of ʔayʔaǰuθəm would be an asset
- Knowledge of program delivery and early intervention
- An acceptable Criminal Record Check, with Vulnerable Sector Check
- A recent TB Test
- First Aid & CPR certification – or willingness to obtain
- Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License and acceptable Driver’s Abstract
Working Conditions
Some adjustment to scheduled hours may be required based on programming needs.
Work will typically take place at Tla’amin Nation’s early childhood centre, Child Development Resource Center (CDRC) and Children’s House, with some time spent at Cousins’ House, the Nation’s youth recreation centre, and/or in a school in the qathet region. Possible other locations based on program needs (ie. local schools).
Physical Conditions
This position will be exposed to a high level of noise and distractions from children. Direct delivery may include moderate physical activity involving walking, standing, bending, and lifting children.
This position requires the ability to function both independently as well as part of a team, sometimes under pressure, while managing multiple priorities and some stressful situations.
