Career Opportunity and Primary Roles / Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to support the planning, development, integration and certification of safety-critical aircraft and aerospace systems.

The successful candidate will perform and coordinate aircraft- and system-level safety engineering activities throughout the development lifecycle. The engineer will work closely with systems, hardware, software, verification, reliability, airworthiness and certification teams to ensure that safety objectives are correctly identified, allocated, implemented, verified and supported by appropriate certification evidence.

The role requires a strong understanding of safety assessment processes, aircraft and system development, safety-driven architecture, requirements traceability and certification-oriented engineering.

Primary Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, maintain, and review system safety assessments in accordance with the applicable certification basis, customer processes and industry guidance.

• Perform or support aircraft-level and system-level Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA).

• Develop and maintain Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSA) and System Safety Assessments (SSA).

• Perform qualitative and quantitative safety analyses, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Common Mode Analysis (CMA), Particular Risk Analysis (PRA) and Zonal Safety Analysis (ZSA).

• Support the identification, classification, and documentation of functional failure conditions and associated safety objectives.

• Derive and allocate safety requirements to systems, subsystems, hardware and software.

• Evaluate proposed architectures against safety objectives, independence requirements, failure-containment strategies, and single-failure considerations.

• Provide safety-driven recommendations concerning architecture, redundancy, monitoring, fault detection, fault accommodation, and mitigation.

• Maintain traceability among hazards, failure conditions, safety objectives, safety requirements, architecture decisions, and verification evidence.

• Review system requirements, architecture descriptions, interface data, design documentation, verification plans, and test evidence from a system-safety perspective.

• Identify and manage safety assumptions, dependencies, limitations, open items, and certification risks.

• Coordinate safety activities with systems engineering, software, airborne electronic hardware, reliability, test, airworthiness and certification stakeholders.

• Support technical and certification reviews, including SRR, PDR, CDR and certification authority reviews, as applicable.

• Prepare clear, review-ready safety lifecycle documentation, compliance evidence, technical presentations and customer deliverables.

• Support resolution of safety-related problem reports, design changes and verification findings.

• Contribute to continuous improvement of system-safety processes, templates, methods and engineering guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, electrical, mechanical, systems, software or computer engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.

• At least five years of relevant experience in aerospace or another highly regulated safety-critical development environment.

• Demonstrated experience performing or contributing to aerospace system-safety assessments.

• Strong working knowledge of SAE ARP4761A/ARP4761 safety assessment processes.

• Working knowledge of SAE ARP4754B/ARP4754A aircraft and system development processes.

• Practical experience with several of the following: FHA, PSSA, SSA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, CMA, PRA and ZSA.

• Experience reviewing system architectures and deriving or allocating safety requirements.

• Understanding of requirements development, validation, verification and bidirectional traceability.

• Ability to interpret complex system designs and identify safety-relevant interfaces, dependencies and failure conditions.

• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical-writing skills.

• Excellent written and spoken English, including the ability to explain safety conclusions to technical and non-specialist stakeholders.

• Availability for full-time work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting certification programs under FAA, Transport Canada, EASA or another recognized civil aviation authority.

• Familiarity with aircraft, rotorcraft, UAS or eVTOL development and certification.

• Experience with avionics, flight controls, electrical power, propulsion, navigation, communication, surveillance or vehicle-management systems.

• Understanding of airborne software and electronic hardware assurance, including RTCA DO-178C, RTCA DO-254, RTCA DO-330 and RTCA DO-331.

• Familiarity with environmental qualification under RTCA DO-160.

• Experience with reliability predictions, failure-rate data and quantitative probability calculations.

• Experience with safety or reliability analysis tools.

• Experience with requirements-management and lifecycle tools such as IBM DOORS, Jama, Polarion or equivalent.

• Experience preparing certification evidence and supporting audits or reviews with customers and certification authorities.

• Experience with model-based systems engineering or model-based safety assessment.

• Experience working with complex electrical or electronic architectures is an asset.

Work Arrangement and Travel

• The work may be performed remotely, subject to project and customer requirements.

• Employees based in Montreal follow a hybrid work arrangement, with at least one day per week in the office.

• Occasional travel to customer or project locations may be required.

• Additional security, export-control or customer-access requirements may apply depending on the assignment.
