Software Engineer (Mid to Sr Levels)

Nomic Bio

About Us

Nomic was founded to make biology easier to measure—and to enable scientists to extend lives by making proteomics accessible, scalable, and routine. Our story began at McGill University, where the co-founders and early team developed breakthrough technology that would change the way proteins are measured.

Today, Nomic is powered by our proprietary nELISA platform—an end-to-end technology that delivers high-throughput, quantitative, and affordable protein data at unprecedented scale. With the launch of Omni 1000, we are making the $50 proteome a reality, breaking down barriers that have limited the field for decades. For the first time, large-scale, quantitative proteomics is accessible to any scientist, supporting everything from drug discovery and translational research to AI-enabled therapeutic development.

Since our launch, we have partnered with leaders in pharma, biotech, and academia—including GlaxoSmithKline and the Broad Institute—and have profiled more than 500,000 samples across diverse applications. Our growth is fueled by over $60 million in investment from top-tier backers, including a recent $42 million Series B.

We are building a team of world-changers—scientists, engineers, and problem solvers who believe that accessible proteomics can help shape the future of medicine. Nomic is headquartered in Montreal, Canada with a satellite research lab in Boston, Massachusetts. If you want your work to have real impact, we would love to meet you.

About The Role

Our Software team’s mission is to design, build, and support world-class software that empowers all nELISA users with proteomics superpowers, including internally at Nomic. Software is integral to our vision of the future, and every aspect of our company today will depend on improving our software stack. Functionally, our stack includes (i) an in-house developed full-stack LIMS that underpins inventory, manufacturing, lab operations, and that will continue to drive further lab automation; (ii) data pipelines and associated cloud data infrastructure to monitor, decode, and quantitatively analyze flow cytometry nELISA experiments; and (iii) a customer-facing web portal that enables users to visualize and analyze their proteomic datasets at scale seamlessly in the browser.

We are also in the middle of an exciting shift in how we build software. We use AI coding tools heavily across the team, and we are actively designing agentic backends and skills for several of our codebases—so that both teammates and AI agents can interact with the LIMS, data pipelines, and lab equipment programmatically. We are looking for engineers who are energized by this and want to help define how a proteomics company builds software in the agentic era.

As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for building all core components of the nELISA software stack, scaling them as needed, and often working on cross-functional projects with our broader Engineering, Commercial, and Lab Operations teams. You will also build internal tools that create and support data-driven feedback loops for teammates in R&D, automation, manufacturing, customer success, and bioinformatics. In short, you will make substantive changes and build the core components of the software stack that underpins the nELISA technology flywheel.

You will therefore play a critical, first-hand role in developing core improvements to the LIMS, web portal, and data infrastructure for all nELISA data. In particular, you will:

  • Build core sub-components of our software stack—database schemas, analysis pipelines and new analysis algorithms, cloud infrastructure and related IaC, full-stack web interfaces, machine learning models, and APIs consumed by our own services and customers. You’ll lean on AI coding tools to move quickly while owning the architecture, review, and correctness.
  • Design and build agentic backends, skills, and AI-augmented tooling—including LLM-powered workflows and machine-readable interfaces—that let our teams and agents interact safely with the LIMS, data pipelines, and lab automation. Help us figure out where agents create real leverage and where they don’t.
  • Develop improved internal tools for the LIMS, and software for our R&D teams, to increase operations and R&D velocity in the lab, including an electronic lab notebook plan tailored to our profiling and manufacturing work.
  • Write modular software that we can use to create efficient analysis pipelines and internal QC tools, using existing libraries, open-source platforms, and commercial options as appropriate.
  • Build better interfaces to out-of-the-box tools from our robotic lab equipment suppliers, and extend these capabilities to enable seamless integration with our stack.
  • Contribute improvements to the codebase that enable further scaling of our nELISA decoding and analysis pipelines; write tests and evaluations, including for AI-generated code and ML/agentic components; integrate monitoring, analytics, and set up robust CI/CD when appropriate.
  • Deploy and scale data pipelines for processing flow cytometry data into quantitative protein concentrations in close collaboration with Data Engineering.
  • Communicate and collaborate not only within the software team but also with the broader internal users of the LIMS, data portal, and data pipeline software, including customers at times.

What We’re Looking For

We are hiring mid to senior levels. The bars below describe what a strong senior candidate looks like; for earlier career candidates we weight demonstrated ability, strong fundamentals, and fluency with modern AI-assisted development over raw experience.

  • Full-stack software engineering experience, ideally with time in biotech and/or life sciences.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) and a real point of view on them—comfortable directing agents, reviewing their output critically, and writing effective specs and context.
  • Technical skills in algorithm development, signal processing, image analysis, computational biology, or bioinformatics.
  • Experience developing new data analysis pipelines and algorithms for biochemical assays (e.g., ELISA, flow cytometry, mass spec, or NGS).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in engineering, computer science, or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong Python skills and ability to prototype and ship modular software that extends an existing codebase—judgment to harden it for production.
  • Experience developing at least one of the following: extensions on an existing LIMS in collaboration with scientists; software interfacing with lab equipment; high-performance data pipelines and stores for biological data that support user workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and in code— including writing clear specs for humans and AI agents.
  • Fluency in English is required as customers and vendors are primarily in the USA, and the role interacts with the US entity.
  • Nice to have: experience building agentic systems—LLM tool use, MCP servers, skills, RAG, or evaluation harnesses; thoughtful approach to AI on sensitive customer data (review, secrets management, verification).

Join Us If You

  • Connect deeply with our mission, ambition, and sense of duty. We developed this technology to better measure biology and discover biomarkers for early disease detection, believing we can eradicate diseases by early diagnosis.
  • Are up for a challenge and want to grow: a team of problem solvers who constantly test themselves, commit to a growth mindset, and give candid feedback to reach full potential.
  • Want to be at the cutting edge of biotechnology and software development. The nELISA is a new tool leveraging DNA nanotechnology; we build its stack with AI and agentic tooling. You design and build pipelines and agents that will support scaling of this technology.
  • Love writing code and working with bioscience users, and want to drive improvements in scientists’ lives from a full-stack perspective.
  • Prefer a diverse cross-functional team. You will interface daily with R&D, Engineering, Operations, and Commercial teams.
  • Want responsibility for addressing the hardest problems. Software is a core competency; writing code at Nomic has widespread impact, both internally and for customers using nELISA data for life-saving research.
