Medical Affairs Manager, Rare Disease, Canada

The Medical Affairs Manager is a strategic member of the Medical Affairs team responsible for contributing to the development and execution of the Canadian Medical Strategy for assigned therapeutic areas and products. The role serves as a scientific leader and trusted strategic partner to cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring the delivery of high-quality medical activities that improve patient outcomes and support business objectives.
Working closely with the Country Medical Director, the Medical Affairs Manager, Rare Disease provides scientific leadership across the product lifecycle, including launch preparation, evidence generation, scientific exchange, stakeholder engagement, and lifecycle management. The role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, business acumen, and the ability to influence without authority and operate within a complex matrix environment.
The Medical Affairs Manager is responsible for ensuring that all activities are scientifically rigorous, compliant with applicable regulations and company policies, and aligned with the needs of patients, healthcare professionals, payers, and other key stakeholders.
Responsibilities:- Lead the development, approval and implementation of the Medical Affairs strategy and annual Medical Plan for assigned products and therapeutic areas.
- Provide medical and scientific leadership across the product/s lifecycle, including launch readiness, evidence generation, scientific exchange, and lifecycle management.
- Serve as the medical subject matter expert and strategic advisor to cross-functional teams including Commercial, Market Access, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Support Programs, and Corporate Affairs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders, healthcare professionals, researchers, patient organizations, and other external stakeholders.
- Lead the development and execution of advisory boards, expert meetings, educational programs, and scientific engagement initiatives.
- Gather, analyze, and translate medical insights and unmet needs into actionable strategies that support patient care and business objectives.
- Support publication planning, medical education activities, investigator-sponsored research, real-world evidence initiatives, and other evidence-generation programs.
- Ensure all medical activities, communications, and materials are scientifically accurate and compliant with Health Canada regulations, Innovative Medicines Canada Code, and company policies.
- Provide medical review and oversight of promotional and non-promotional materials, grants, sponsorships, and other medical affairs activities.
- Monitor the scientific, clinical, reimbursement, and competitive landscape to identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities, and communicate strategic recommendations to leadership.
- Manage assigned medical projects, budgets, vendors, and external partners to ensure timely and effective execution.
- Leverage digital technologies, data analytics, and AI-enabled tools to enhance medical impact, stakeholder engagement, and operational efficiency.

REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced scientific or clinical degree required (MD, PharmD, PhD, MSc, NP, or equivalent).
- Minimum 5-7 years of pharmaceutical industry, or Medical Affairs experience with progressive levels of responsibility.
- Experience developing and executing medical strategies, evidence-generation initiatives, and scientific engagement programs.
- Strong understanding of Medical Affairs, pharmaceutical development, the Canadian healthcare environment, and applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders within a matrix organization.
- Excellent scientific communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
- Proven strategic thinking, business acumen, and project management capabilities.
- Experience with product launches, budget management, vendor oversight, and digital tools/AI-enabled technologies is considered an asset.
- Experience in Rare Diseases, Hematology/Oncology, or other specialty therapeutic areas is preferred.
- Travel up to 25%, including occasional overnight travel.
Expected Base Pay Range (CAD): $ 150,000 to $ 180,000 per annum
The successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. The expected base pay range for this role may be modified based on market conditions.
