About YPLEA

The Yukon Public Legal Education Association (YPLEA) has served the Yukon for over forty years as an access-to-justice organization. YPLEA helps the public understand their legal rights and responsibilities and navigate the legal system with confidence.

YPLEA operates the well-known Law Line, providing free legal information by phone, and develops widely used public resources on family law, wills and estates, adult protection, and other everyday legal matters. YPLEA works closely with Yukon lawyers, the Law Society of Yukon, Yukon First Nations, community organizations and territorial and federal justice partners.

The Opportunity

YPLEA's Board of Directors is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization's staff, programs and community partnerships. Reporting to the Board, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of YPLEA, ensuring the organization delivers accurate, accessible legal information across the territory, including to rural and Yukon First Nation communities, while maintaining a healthy, well-run and sustainably funded organization.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who is equally comfortable with strategic planning, funder relationships, and staying close to the day-to-day work of a small, mission-driven team.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Operations

• Provide day-to-day leadership and management of YPLEA staff, contractors and volunteers.
• Oversee delivery of the Law Line and other public legal information services, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
• Maintain sound financial management, including budgeting, monthly reporting and oversight of accounts.
• Ensure compliance with employment standards, contracts, insurance, and non-profit governance requirements.

Governance & Board Relations

• Work with the Board of Directors to set strategic direction and organizational priorities.
• Prepare reports, financial statements and materials for Board and Annual General Meetings.
• Support Board recruitment, orientation, and policy development as needed.

Funding & Partnerships

• Identify, secure and manage funding from government, foundations and other sources, including grant writing and reporting.
• Maintain strong working relationships with the Yukon bar, the Law Society of Yukon, Government of Yukon, Yukon First Nations and community partners.
• Represent YPLEA publicly and act as a spokesperson with media and at community and territorial events.

Programs & Content

• Guide the development and review of public legal education materials (family law, wills and estates, adult protection and other priority areas).
• Identify emerging legal information needs across Yukon communities and adapt programming to address them.
• Support outreach and presentations to community organizations, schools and Yukon First Nations.

What You Bring

• A degree in public administration, social sciences, education, law, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Several years of progressively responsible experience in management roles, including staff supervision and budget responsibility.
• Demonstrated experience with fundraising, grant writing, and funder reporting.
• A strong understanding of, or willingness to learn, the legal information needs of Yukon's rural and Yukon First Nation communities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts in plain language.
• Sound judgment, discretion, and comfort working with the public on sensitive legal matters.
• Experience working with a volunteer Board of Directors is an asset.
• The ability to speak and read French is an asset.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $68,000 - $80,000 annually for 30 hours/week, commensurate with experience.

YPLEA offers paid vacation, and a supportive, flexible small-team work environment. Relocation support may be available for candidates moving to Whitehorse.

A satisfactory criminal record check is required as a condition of employment for this position.
