Desktop Publisher (Term Contract)

Position Summary

We are seeking a Desktop Publisher to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the effectiveness and quality of internal and external communication tools and services.

Under the direction of the Communications Supervisor, the Desktop Publisher provides culturally informed communication support services to staff, programs, and community members. This role involves overseeing print production, event photography, business card creation, and the assembly and distribution of community itineraries and newspapers. It includes hands-on tasks such as printing, laminating, collating, binding, and scoring, as well as managing photography services for general events, ID photos, and family portraits. The Desktop Publisher will also engage in community relations activities by supporting communication efforts that connect, inform, and celebrate the Seabird Island community.

This is a full time term contract ending on March 31, 2026.

What You'll Do

Design and Print Processing

• Design and develop a wide range of internal and external communication materials, including staff notices, weekly staff news, brochures, posters, banners, flyers, and other promotional content.
  


• Collaborate in the creation, formatting, and layout of the organization-wide content to ensure it is visually appealing and easy to understand.
  


• Ensure all materials align with Seabird Island’s visual identity and branding standards.
  


• Coordinate the full print production process, including printing, laminating, collating, binding, and scoring of materials.
  


• Maintain quality control throughout the production lifecycle to ensure accuracy, consistency, and high quality output.
  


• Prepare and distribute printed materials for events, campaigns, and organizational initiatives in a timely and organized manner.

Identification and Branding Materials

• Facilitate the creation and production of business cards and staff photo ID badges, ensuring consistent formatting and accurate information.
  


• Support the development of materials that reinforce organizational branding and professionalism.
  


• Maintain and update the organization’s digital asset library, ensuring all visual content is categorized, current, and easily accessible.
  


• Ensure proper storage and naming conventions are followed for future ease of use and brand consistency.

Photography and Visual Media

• Conduct a variety of photography services, including general event coverage, staff ID photos, and family portraits.


• Support events by capturing key moments and producing high-quality imagery for use in digital and print communications.
  


• Assist in photo editing and formatting for inclusion in official publications and archives.

Collaboration and Quality Assurance

• Collaborate with departments or project teams to determine design goals, requirements, and timelines.
  


• Review and proof all finalized materials to ensure they are error-free and meet quality expectations before distribution.

Other Duties

• Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values. 

Working / Special Conditions

• Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.


• Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.


• Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives.
  


• Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of events, meetings, and engagements. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.

What You Bring

• Post-secondary diploma or certificate in Desktop Publishing, Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field is required.
  


• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a desktop publishing, graphic design, or print production role.
  


• Proficiency with desktop publishing and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Publisher.
  


• Experience with print production equipment and processes, including laminating, binding, collating, and scoring.
  


• Experience in digital asset management and content organization is considered an asset.
  


• Photography experience, including event photography and photo editing, is an asset.


• Experience working with First Nations communities or organizations is preferred and will be considered a strong asset.

• Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.


• Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  


• Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
