The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

General Qualifications and Competencies:
- A valid Nova Scotia teacher's license
- A Master's of Education Degree in Instructional/Educational Leadership or a Master's level degree with equivalent leadership education is preferred
- Previous administrative experience will be given preference
- Demonstrated successful instructional leadership (administrative and/or teaching) in the level(s) to which you are applying is preferred
- A minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience in a public school is required
- Proven leadership abilities and organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills
- Motivation, knowledge and ability to use applicable technology in developing a balanced approach between the teaching, learning and administrative functions within the school
- Well developed decision-making and creative problem solving ability
- Superior skills in strategic planning and implementation of instructional programs;
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, quality inclusive education for all students;
- Superior ability to stimulate professional growth of staff, through effective professional development programs;
- Demonstrated commitment to and above average knowledge and abilities in the areas of curriculum and curriculum development, implementation and evaluation;
- Superior skills in facilities management, record keeping, financial management and in the supervision of teaching and other staff;
- Demonstrated ability to discharge the duties of a principal as set out in Section 38 of the Education Act.

The Principal of a public school under the jurisdiction of a regional centre is the educational leader of the school and has management responsibility for the school, including supervision of teachers and other staff. The Principal is responsible for the positive, safe, culturally responsive and respectful learning and working environment of the school and to establish a school wide level of commitment to high standards and academic success for all students. The Principal provides leadership. cultivates leadership in others and supports professional growth through professional development and performance management of staff. As a part of the Regional Centre Leadership team, the Principal ensures the interests of the Centre are maintained and its policies and procedures are followed.
Key Responsibilities:
All duties as prescribed under of Nova Scotia, Duties of Principals:
It is the duty of every principal to:
- ensure that the public school program and curricula are implemented;
- keep attendance records respecting every student enrolled at the school and report thereon to the regional executive director as required by the regional executive director;
- in accordance with policies established by the Minister, take all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance at school by the students enrolled in the school;
- communicate regularly with the parents of students;
- ensure that reasonable steps are taken to create and maintain a safe, orderly, positive and effective learning environment;
- investigate and respond to reports of unacceptable behaviour of students, and, where the principal believes the well-being of a student has been endangered as a result of the unacceptable behaviour of any other student, notify the parents of the students;
- ensure that Provincial and regional centre policies are followed;
- identify the staffing needs of the school;
- assist the regional executive director with the selection and hiring of staff for the school in accordance with policies established by the regional centre;
- evaluate the performance of teachers and other staff of the school;
- discipline teachers and other staff of the school in accordance with policies established by the regional centre;
- assist the regional centre in the development and implementation of professional-development programs;
- encourage teachers and other staff of the school, students and parents to participate in school decision-making through school advisory councils and committees;
- participate in the establishment and operation of a school advisory council;
- assist in the development of school improvement plans and, upon approval by the regional centre, coordinate their implementation;
- account to the regional executive director for money received from the regional centre or any other source;
- account to the Minister, through the regional executive director, for the performance of the school;
- cooperate with the staff of other departments to better meet the needs of the students in the school; and
- perform such other duties as are prescribed by this Act or the regulations or assigned by the regional executive director, including but limited to the following:
a) championing the implementation of any regional or departmental initiatives as the key change agent for the school
b) encouraging teachers to use a variety of techniques and teaching strategies to be culturally responsive to students’ needs
c) ensuring that staff schedules and assignments reflect qualifications, applicable collective agreements and provincial/regional policies and procedures
d) be responsible for the assessment program carried on in school and for the evaluation of student progress, as directed by the Regional Executive Director of Education.
e) enforce judiciously, Section 27 of the Education Act regarding the suspension of students as per the Provincial School Code of Conduct Policy.
f) be responsible for appointing a substitute from the approved list, as issued by the Regional Executive Director of Education, in cases of staff absence in accordance with regional policies and procedures.
g) be responsible for supervision of the physical plant and school facilities, and in cooperation with the Coordinator of Facilities Management and Director of Operational Services, to see that such facilities are maintained in acceptable condition.
h) maintain ongoing compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act at the school site
i) attend all meetings called by the Regional Executive Director of Education,
j) inform a supervisor when absent from duties.

School is rated in payband 13 with a salary range of $114882 - $143602.
