Position Summary

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, executes endocrinology laboratory projects and experiments. Manages mouse colonies. Performs specialized technical tasks in animal physiology and functional genomics. Collects, compiles, and analyzes data. Acts as a resource person, resolves problems, and trains others. Maintains equipment and participates in procuring reagents.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Acts as the main technician in the lab working on functional genomics studies in mice. Oversees multiple mouse strains, including breeding colonies, genotyping, injections, minor surgical procedures, and collection of blood and tissue samples. Analyzes tissues and fluids and supports lab staff and students in managing their mouse strains.
• Executes laboratory projects and experiments within objectives set by the supervisor, including supporting PhD students and post-doctoral fellows with mouse models and hormone studies, and performing sample collection.
• Liaises with the Animal Core Facility regarding the import and export of mouse strains.
• Performs specialized technical tasks in areas such as biochemistry, physiology, histology, molecular biology, animal husbandry, and animal procedures, including genotyping and hormonal assays.
• Compiles experimental data, prepares reports, and discusses results and interpretations with team members. Maintains accurate records and contributes to the preparation of materials for publication or presentation.
• Acts as a resource person by troubleshooting issues, training others, and providing technical guidance on work methods, equipment, techniques, and mouse colony management.
• Ensures compliance with safety regulations, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, performs minor repairs, and coordinates servicing as required.
• Supports inventory management and the procurement of equipment and materials.
• Keeps abreast of developments in the field to maintain up-to-date knowledge and technical skills.
• Provides support to the lab coordinator in the coordination of laboratory operations and administrative tasks and serves as a backup during periods of absence (e.g., vacations), ensuring continuity of operations and adherence to established procedures.

• Proven ability to train and mentor others on laboratory techniques and procedures
• High level of adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced research environment
• Commitment to maintaining high standards of animal care, ethics, and regulatory compliance
• Proficiency with standard laboratory software and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel and relevant research systems)
• Initiative and proactive approach to identifying issues and implementing solutions
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive research data responsibly
• Bilingual English/French
