The Opportunity – Onsite Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Consultant

Location: Onsite – Data Centre Construction Project (Sturgeon County, Alberta)

Duration: 18 to 24 month contract

We are seeking an experienced  EHS Consultant to join our EHS Team to provide full-time safety oversight for a large-scale data centre construction project in the Sturgeon County, Alberta area. Acting as the client's independent representative onsite, this role will serve as the owner's eyes and ears on the ground, ensuring contractors and subcontractors comply with applicable Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation, environmental requirements, project safety standards, and industry best practices. The successful candidate will provide objective third-party oversight across a complex, multi-contractor construction environment that includes building construction, heavy civil work, utility installation, traffic management, and onsite power generation infrastructure. This position reports to the Project Director/Construction Manager with a dotted-line relationship to the client's Corporate EHS Lead.

Position Highlights:

  • Full-time onsite role supporting a major multi-phase data centre construction project.

  • Independent third-party consultant position providing client-side safety oversight.

  • Opportunity to work on complex construction activities including civil works, utilities, traffic accommodation, and mission-critical infrastructure.

  • Direct involvement with safety leadership, environmental compliance, incident management, and contractor performance monitoring.

  • Potential extension through commissioning and project completion.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct daily site inspections and safety observations across construction, civil, utility, excavation, crane, and access road activities.

  • Monitor compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code, as well as applicable federal, provincial, and municipal requirements.

  • Review and audit contractor and subcontractor safety documentation, including Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safe Work Plans, and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs).

  • Identify unsafe conditions, recommend corrective actions, and issue stop-work directives where authorized and required.

  • Coordinate with project teams and traffic consultants to ensure approved Traffic Accommodation Strategies and traffic control measures remain effective and compliant.

  • Monitor temporary accesses, haul routes, site entrances, and traffic control plans for ongoing compliance.

  • Oversee environmental compliance including erosion and sediment control, dust management, spill prevention, waste management, and permit requirements.

  • Coordinate spill response and regulatory reporting in accordance with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas requirements.

  • Lead or support investigations of incidents, near misses, and first aid events, including root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly EHS reports, including key performance indicators and safety metrics.

  • Ensure timely reporting of serious incidents to regulatory authorities where required.

  • Verify worker orientations, certifications, competency records, and training requirements before site access.

  • Facilitate toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, awareness initiatives, and ongoing safety communications.

  • Support emergency preparedness planning, response procedures, and emergency drills.

  • Act as the primary contact for EHS matters between the client, contractors, subcontractors, regulators, and other project stakeholders.

  • Participate in construction coordination meetings and provide regular updates on safety performance, risks, and corrective actions.

  • Support coordination efforts where adjacent or concurrent projects create overlapping safety considerations.

What We’re Looking For

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive EHS experience within heavy industrial, infrastructure, or large-scale commercial construction environments.

  • Experience supporting data centre, mission-critical facility, power generation, or similarly complex construction projects is strongly preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation and experience applying regulatory requirements on active multi-contractor worksites.

  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, reviewing, or auditing Traffic Accommodation Strategies and worksite traffic safety plans.

  • Strong incident investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action management, and technical report writing skills.

  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to work independently while providing objective third-party oversight in a complex construction environment.

  • NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) and/or CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation considered a strong asset.

  • Experience with COR (Certificate of Recognition) audits and safety program administration.

  • Experience working with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) and/or municipal authorities on construction permitting and traffic accommodation initiatives.

  • Familiarity with data centre-specific hazards, including high-voltage electrical work, fuel systems, backup generation, cooling infrastructure, and commissioning activities.

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, navigate uneven terrain, climb ladders or scaffolding, and access all areas of an active construction site while wearing required PPE.

  • Availability to support rotating schedules, weekend coverage during critical project activities, and emergency response situations as required.
