Health & Safety Officer

Being Health & Safety Officer, you will be a trusted partner to our field and office teams, championing safe work practices, supporting compliance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. You will be a primary advocate for continuing to promote a strong health and safety culture; through not only developing new and maintaining existing safe work procedures and policies, but through frequent site visits working with site employees to create awareness. This role is ideal for someone with strong understanding and knowledge of provincial (WorkSafe BC) and federal OHS legislation, and effective communication skills to guide employees on best health & safety practices and investigate incidents .

This position reports directly to the VP, Finance & Administration, working closely with our Health & Safety Coordinator, Superintendents, Foremen and Project Managers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Work shall include but not necessarily be bound by the following:

Leadership & Safety Culture

• Act as the organization's subject matter expert on occupational health and safety matters.


• Promote and reinforce Sasco's "Safety is Everyone's Business" philosophy.


• Build positive working relationships with field staff, supervisors, foremen, project managers, executives, unions, clients, and regulatory agencies.


• Influence safety performance through coaching, mentoring, education, and collaboration.


• Support operational leaders in taking ownership of safety performance within their teams.


• Lead the monthly health & safety meetings, recruiting, and ensuring continuous learning for committee members.

Program Management

• Develop, review, and implement policies, procedures, safe work practices, and safe work procedures.


• Monitor compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations, client requirements, COR standards, and industry best practices.


• Manage annual COR certification and audit programs, including conducting the internal audits.


• Maintain contractor prequalification requirements and client safety programs.

Incident Management & Investigations

• Lead and coordinate incident investigations; identifying immediate, contributing, and root causes, and developing corrective and preventative actions with operational leaders.


• Monitor implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.


• Prepare regulatory reports and communicate with WorkSafeBC when required.


• Analyze trends and develop proactive strategies to reduce injuries and incidents.

Field Operations Support

• Conduct regular site visits, inspections, observations, and audits.


• Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors and workers.


• Support project teams in hazard identification and risk assessment activities.


• Participate in project startup planning and major risk reviews.


• Assist with developing mitigation plans for high-risk work activities.

Training & Competency Development

• Develop or coordinate health and safety training programs.


• Deliver safety orientations and educational sessions.


• Work with supervisors and managers to improve safety knowledge and execution.

Reporting & Systems Improvement

• Analyze lagging and leading indicators to identify trends and opportunities.


• Develop meaningful health and safety performance metrics and dashboards.


• Champion SiteDocs (H&S management program) improving reporting processes, inspections, observations, and corrective action tracking.


• Prepare monthly and quarterly safety performance reports for executive leadership.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

• National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation or equivalent


• Internal COR Auditor Certification (or willingness to complete this course)


• Valid Class 5 drivers’ license


• 5 + years of construction health and safety experience


• Experience interpreting and applying WorkSafeBC regulations and occupational health and safety legislation


• Proven experience managing safety programs, inspections, audits, corrective actions, and training initiatives


• Experience managing COR programs and audits


• Experience within electrical construction strongly preferred


• Experience working with SiteDocs an asset


• High attention to detail with strong accuracy, analytical thinking, and problem‑solving skills in dynamic or ambiguous environments.


• Strong organizational and time‑management skills; with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.


• Adaptable and flexible, able to adjust quickly to shifting priorities or requirements.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the focus on transparency and expectation alignment for diverse stakeholders.


• Demonstrate ownership and accountability for delivering high‑quality outcomes and driving clear decisions and next steps.
