About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Technical Design Engineer with extensive experience in machining, technical drawings, and working directly with clients. You'll be the go-to expert for translating complex client needs into manufacturable designs, using your CAD expertise and machining knowledge to drive custom solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Collaboration: Serve as a technical point of contact for clients, gathering requirements, discussing manufacturability, and providing recommendations for machining approaches.
- Technical Drawing Creation: Develop detailed technical drawings from scratch using SolidWorks or equivalent software.
- Design for Manufacturability: Translate client concepts into viable production-ready parts, ensuring fit, function, and material compatibility.
- Reverse Engineering: Analyze and replicate existing components with minimal or no original documentation; convert physical parts into 3D CAD models and technical drawings.
- Machining Expertise: Provide input on machining techniques (milling, turning, EDM, etc.) and material selection (tool steels, aluminum, stainless steel).
- Problem Solving: Investigate technical challenges, recommend solutions, and troubleshoot issues throughout the design and production process.
- Documentation & QA: Prepare and review technical documentation, tolerances, and specifications to ensure adherence to customer and industry standards.
- Collaboration: Work closely with machinists, production planners, and leadership to ensure smooth transition from design to production.
What You Bring
- 6+ years of experience in technical machining or mechanical design roles.
- 3+ years of advanced CAD design (SolidWorks preferred).
- Deep expertise in precision machining and manufacturing processes.
- Proven ability to create technical drawings from scratch for complex, custom components.
- Experience as a Technical Estimator - able to scope cost, time, materials, and labour needed to complete a technical or engineering-related project
- Strong communication skills and comfort interfacing directly with clients.
- Knowledge of GD&T, tolerancing, and material properties.
- Experience in a custom machine shop
