The Reporter researches, writes, and photographs news stories for both print and online platforms. This includes coverage of local events, government, business, people, and issues that matter to the community. Reporters at the Herald are expected to juggle multiple stories and deadlines while building strong community relationships.

Primary Duties

  • Pitch, research, and write news, features, and event coverage for print and digital,
  • Take photos, gather quotes, and capture multimedia content to accompany stories,
  • Develop a beat or area of focus, while remaining flexible to cover a wide range of local issues,
  • Attend public meetings (e.g. city council, school board), court cases, and press conferences,
  • Conduct interviews with sources from all backgrounds in a professional and ethical manner,
  • Monitor social media, police reports, and community boards for potential stories,
  • Ensure factual accuracy and balanced representation in all published content,
  • Upload content to the Herald’s website and social media platforms as assigned,
  • Meet tight weekly deadlines while juggling multiple assignments,
  • In collaboration with K’en T’em Limited Partnership, support the inclusion and fair portrayal of
  • Indigenous and nłeʔképmx stories and voices, in keeping with professional journalism standards and the Herald’s role in community storytelling, and
  • Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Editor.

Work Environment

Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, less one hour for lunch, fluctuating when needed for scheduled events and breaking news. Hours may fluctuate based on operational needs. The average work week is approximately 35 hours,

Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,

Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the Merritt Herald office at 1951 Garcia St, Merritt, BC,

Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,

Paid Winter Break Office Closure: Please note that the Merritt Herald still runs editions during this time so days off may not be consecutive,

Benefits : 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,

Pension : Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service),

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information through engaging and accurate written content for various platforms,
  • Skilled in conducting thorough research to ensure factual accuracy and to provide context to stories,
  • Experience in taking high-quality photos and creating multimedia content that enhances storytelling,
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with community members, sources, and colleagues,
  • Comfortable managing multiple stories and deadlines, with the ability to pivot between different topics and issues as needed,
  • Knowledge of best practices in journalism, including fairness, accuracy, and ethical sourcing,
  • Familiarity with utilizing social media platforms to engage with the community and promote stories effectively,
  • Recognizes and respects cultural diversity, and
  • Willingness to learn nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity, with a commitment to inclusive and respectful storytelling.

Experience And Requirements

  • Post secondary in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered,
  • Prior experience in journalism or reporting, preferably in a community-focused context,
  • A portfolio showcasing a range of writing samples, multimedia content, and news coverage,
  • Proficiency in digital content management systems, photo editing software, and social media platforms,
  • Willingness to attend public meetings, court cases, and events outside of regular office hours as needed,
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in working with communities and amplifying their voices in media, and
  • A valid BC driver’s license and willingness to travel within the community to cover stories.
