Within the context of a dynamic client and family-centred care model, and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and the vision and values of the organization, including Indigenous Cultural Safety, cultural humility and anti-racism principles, the Occupational Therapist, participates as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team by providing occupational therapy services to designated clients who are seriously affected by substance use and mental health problems to enable them to achieve and maintain optimal health outcomes. Travels to various work locations, performs assessments on client’s occupational performance utilizing an evidence-based approach, plans and implements outcome oriented services, evaluates the effectiveness of the services and acts as a clinical resource for the team. Prepares and maintains records, participates in interdisciplinary research, demonstrates safe and effective resource utilization and quality management, and contributes to the development, review and promotion of occupational therapy services. As required, contributes to the organization and delivery of occupational therapy services by participating in departmental/program quality improvement initiatives, meetings, research and education.
Education & Experience
- Current full registration as an Occupational Therapist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).
- Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
- Two (2) years' recent, related clinical experience in a complex health care environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Valid B.C. Driver's License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of Occupational Therapy theory and practice within a client/d family centred model of care.
- Knowledge of the CHCPBC standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners.
- Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
- Knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice related to designated clinical area(s).
- Knowledge of occupational therapy standardised tests and measures.
- Knowledge of research process and methodology.
- Ability to teach and empower clients to assume control over their health.
- Ability to adjust to unexpected events, problem-solve, set priorities and deal with conflict.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of external agencies.
- Demonstrated understanding of Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction and Recovery Oriented Care.
- Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
- Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safety care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
- Ability to provide effective consultation.
- Ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others in a complex health care environment.
- Ability to recognize when referral to another health care professional is required.
- Demonstrated skill in occupational therapy techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.
- Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software application.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.
As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
