We are looking for a Director, Fraud Management
The Director, Fraud Management helps business leaders prevent, detect, respond to and learn from fraud events by embedding clear accountabilities, effective controls and practical governance across the business.
Reporting to the Vice-President, Business Risk and Controls, this role provides first-line fraud risk oversight and advice. You will work closely with fraud operations, product, digital, technology, data, compliance, legal, privacy, financial crime, operational risk, cyber security, third-party risk, internal audit and customer-facing teams to balance customer experience, regulatory expectations and operational resilience.
What you will do:
- Lead and maintain first-line fraud risk standards, roles, decision rights and governance routines.
- Lead or support fraud governance forums, ensuring decisions, issues and actions are clearly documented and followed through.
- Work with Business Risk and Controls teams to identify opportunities to strengthen fraud prevention and coordinate action across the business.
- Lead or challenge fraud risk assessments across business activities, including internal and external fraud, scams, identity compromise, account takeover, payments fraud, application fraud and emerging fraud methods.
- Ensure fraud risks are assessed during new product approvals, digital changes, process redesign, outsourcing, vendor onboarding and other material business changes.
- Maintain a practical view of fraud risks, controls, issues, action plans and accountable owners within business risk and control assessments.
- Use fraud losses, near misses, customer complaints, investigations, external intelligence and control testing results to refresh risk priorities.
- Advise business teams on the design of preventive, detective and responsive fraud controls, including risk and control self-assessments and other control activities.
- Challenge control gaps and support action plans that are specific, owned, time-bound and sustainable.
- Work with the central Business Risk and Controls team to enhance fraud reporting for business leaders and relevant risk committees.
- Act as a first-line fraud subject matter expert during material fraud events, significant control failures and emerging fraud attacks.
- Participate in post-event reviews and help translate lessons learned into stronger controls, procedures, training and governance.
- Translate regulatory and policy expectations into practical first-line business practices and support regulatory requests, reviews, audits and assurance activities.
- Provide senior fraud risk advice to business and Business Risk and Controls executives while promoting a culture in which fraud prevention is part of everyday business decisions.
What you will bring:
- Ten or more years of experience in fraud risk, business risk and controls, operational risk, financial crime, compliance, audit, investigations, fraud operations or a related field.
- Experience leading governance, controls, issue management, risk reporting and senior stakeholder engagement in a regulated environment.
- Strong knowledge of fraud methods, scams, prevention and detection controls, authentication, transaction monitoring, investigations, recoveries and customer impacts.
- Experience using data, intelligence, customer impacts and control results to identify emerging risks and priorities.
- The ability to turn risk expectations into practical governance, controls, remediation plans and measurable outcomes.
- Sound judgement in uncertain situations, with the ability to accelerate material concerns promptly and make complex issues clear for decision-makers.
- Experience influencing senior leaders and leading cross-functional work where outcomes depend on collaboration.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing concise reports, recommendations and governance materials for senior leaders.
- An understanding of Canadian financial services operations and relevant customer protection, privacy, financial crime and operational risk expectations.
- A bachelor’s degree in business, commerce, risk management, finance, criminology, law, computer science, data analytics or a related field.
- Financial services experience involving payments, digital banking, cards, deposits, lending, onboarding, contact centres or customer channels; an asset.
- Advanced education or specialized training in fraud, financial crime, operational risk, investigations, technology, data or compliance; an asset.
- A Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Certified Internal Auditor, risk management, data analytics or other relevant financial services designation; an asset.
