Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Health Policy

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Health and Society (DHS) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Health Policy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Health Services Research, Public Health, Public Policy, Social Policy, Social and Behavioural Health Sciences or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. We seek candidates who have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching in both large lecture-style and smaller seminar settings. The candidate is expected to build strong connections with the new Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH).

The successful candidate will have teaching interests that complement and broaden our existing  departmental and campus strengths and priorities. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, assessment, curriculum development, TA management and mentorship, and development of online instructional material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry/practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to work within an interdisciplinary department that values collaboration across discipline, rank, and method. We are interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to increasing access to post-secondary education experiences. Engagement in professional practice and health policy work will be considered an asset.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching and the capacity to teach a wide range of courses in the area of health policy as it pertains to theory and practice, contemporary themes and analytics; methodologies associated with the study of health-related matters; practicalities of the Canadian health care system particularly as it relates to aging and aging care delivery, international comparisons, and political systems; and ethical considerations. Teaching in courses such as Health Policy and Systems, Exploring Health and Society: Theories, Perspectives, and Patterns; Navigating Health and Society: Research, Practice, and Policy; Politics of Canadian Health Policy; Comparative Health Systems; Public Health; and Health and Aging will be considered relevant to this position.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and the capacity to teach a wide range of courses in the area of health policy as well as the commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, leading workshops or seminars, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted (including the required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching beginner and advanced undergraduate courses in health policy and will also fulfill administrative activities related to teaching and student success; participating in and eventually leading curriculum development; and contributing to program and departmental initiatives. In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a service load.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

The salary range is $115,000 - $130,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
