How to become a Community interpreter
Community interpreters should possess fluency in at least two languages, exceptional communication skills, cultural competence, and flexibility to bridge gaps between diverse communities. These skills are paramount for their career growth and successful employment in this expanding field.
Hard skills:
- Listening Comprehension: Ability to understand spoken language and non-verbal cues in order to accurately interpret conversations
- Reading Comprehension: Capacity to understand written language and interpret the meaning of text
- Multilingualism: Proficiency in more than one language, including the ability to switch between languages quickly and accurately
- Cultural Awareness: Knowledge of the customs, behaviors, beliefs, and norms of different cultures
