The Medication Nurse Assistant (MNA) is responsible for assisting licensed nurses in the safe preparation, administration, and documentation of medications to patients, in accordance with physician orders, organizational policies, and regulatory standards. The role focuses on ensuring patient safety, accurate medication delivery, and high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Medication Administration

Assist in administering prescribed medications under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Verify patient identity and medication details following the Five Rights of medication administration
Accurately document medication administration and report any discrepancies
Patient Care Support

Monitor patients for medication side effects, adverse reactions, and changes in condition
Assist patients with oral medications and observe medication intake
Provide basic patient care including vital signs, hygiene support, and mobility assistance
Clinical Support

Prepare medication carts, trays, and supplies
Maintain clean, organized, and secure medication storage areas
Support infection control and safety protocols
Communication & Reporting

Immediately report medication errors, refusals, or adverse reactions to the supervising nurse
Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members
Assist in care coordination and patient education as directed
Compliance & Documentation

Follow all healthcare regulations, privacy laws (HIPAA or local equivalents), and facility policies
Maintain accurate patient records and medication logs
Participate in audits, training, and competency assessments
Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certified Medication Nurse Assistant (MNA) or equivalent certification
  • Valid nursing assistant license/registration (as per local regulations)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification preferred
  • 1–2 years of experience in a clinical or long-term care setting preferred

Effective communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work under supervision in a fast-paced healthcare environment
Work Environment

Hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or home care settings
Shift-based work including nights, weekends, and holidays
