Regular Full-Time
Working under the direction of the Clinical Operations Manager, the Phlebotomist supports an interprofessional health care team working to assess and engage new clients, document assessments, develop care plans and interventions, and assist with organizing and facilitating team and case management meetings.
Grade 12 and successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program and one (1) year of recent, related experience working with an interdisciplinary team, working with diverse marginalized populations or community in a primary care, HIV/AIDS, HCV, addictions and/or mental health setting.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Ability to work collaboratively with an interprofessional health care team.
Knowledge of health care disciplines, systems and policies.
Knowledge of and exposure to trauma informed care, violence prevention, transgender care, harm reduction, recovery-oriented practice and indigenous cultural competency training.
Knowledge of client centred care, and an understanding of psychiatric illnesses’ impact on social functioning.
Knowledge of health conditions disproportionately impacting marginalized populations.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and equipment following infection control, safety, and quality assurance guidelines
Prepare clients for blood draws and ECG tests, explaining procedures and ensuring safety and comfort. Observe for signs of reaction to phlebotomy. Ensure collection packs, specimens and accompanying documents are accurately labeled in accordance with the established operating procedures and TDG specifications.
Seal collection pack tubing into required number of segments.
Prepare and organize blood product packaging materials; pack and document blood collection in preparation for transfer to Laboratory.
Record required information at each phase of the collection process according to regulatory requirements.
Perform quality control checks on equipment, document control performed and report problems/issues to Clinical Operations Manager immediately.
Participate in team initiated, client-centered research and quality assurance initiatives.
The Hope to Health Clinic, Research and Innovation Centre in the Downtown Eastside is a unique and innovative health clinic comprised of a multidisciplinary clinical team focused on providing primary and specialty care for patients/ clients in the Downtown Eastside (DTES). The R&I centre is staffed by an interdisciplinary team (e.g., physicians, nurses, counsellors, peer navigators) and provides “wrap-around” healthcare to clients ensuring they receive the full continuum of care under one roof. Hope to Health Clinic works as part of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. (The BC-CfE is a world-renowned HIV/AIDS Centre with innovative, low barrier approach to healthcare delivery in clinical practice and an integrated group of research concentrations in Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Trials, Population Health and Epidemiology, Health Economics and Professional Education Programs. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians including Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Peers and researchers including Health Economists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Researchers, Statisticians, Programmers, and Data Analysts work collaboratively to improve the health of British Columbians with HIV and communities facing socio-economic barriers in accessing healthcare.
