Position Overview: The Project Manager is a leadership position that is viewed as a critical go-to resource for a wide array of technical and business-related matters. The Project Manager supervises and has budgetary authority for civil engineering projects, with a focus on complex and high-profile projects. This includes acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants to deliver projects according to plan. A critical role of a Project Manager is to effectively lead the people within their team and be a key and reliable resource for them on both technical and non-technical matters as their career develops. A Project Manager is the principal project administrator and communications link between the firm and:
Local, Provincial, and Federal Regulatory agencies
Public Authorities, and
The General Construction Contractor.
In most cases a Senior Project Manager will oversee at least one Project Manager. Be completely versed in the firm-client contract for the project, and of the client's objectives. Responsible for the entire project life cycle, from preliminary services through project implementation.
Manage all aspects associated with client relationship management and project service delivery. Ultimately responsible for ensuring the civil drawings and specifications meet established project criteria, applicable standards, and schedule objectives.
Manage and maintain a significant project portfolio usually in excess of $1.5 Million repeat and new sales annual revenue.
Establish documentation and administrative organization for the project.
Analyze the project scope, the client's RFP and firm's proposal with all internal and external Project Team members. Organize the work on the project and set forth the procedures to be employed in accomplishing the project.
Be the primary point-of contact for all incoming and outgoing project information. Ensure proper distribution of project information to all project team members and sub-consultants.
Attend project meetings, as necessary.
Take a prominent role in providing leadership and employee support to all assigned team members, including Project Managers reporting to them.
Preparation of reports, proposals, and tender/bid submissions, budgets, project plans, and other supporting documentation, as required.
Review project costs and prepare monthly billings, ensuring that invoices are sent to the Client in a timely manner (typically within 30 days of the end of the work period).
Administer and oversee the project budget.
Proactively notify the Client of changes in project scope and prepare estimates for additional design fees.
Contract for the services of outside consultants when required.
Assign Billers to some projects and provide training to new Billers on invoicing procedures.
Follow-up with clients on proposals, invoices and tracking of Accounts Receivable.
Keep the Client, Branch Manager, and the Accounting Department informed on the status of the project.
Identify long lead items and proposed form of construction contract.
Provide leadership to and seek opportunities to initiate training of Project Engineers and Project Managers to aid in their development of communication, business, and client management skills.
Minimum 10 years of experience within the civil engineering field barring special exemption as granted.
A formal course in Project Management either as part of a Certificate or Diploma in Project Management curriculum (confirm locally available and eligible options with your Branch Manager) or as part of an Aplin Martin Certificate training program.
Ability to work simultaneously on several different projects and with multiple lead designers.
Knowledgeable in civil engineering design principles.
