Road Safety & Traffic Investigations is responsible for coordinating and directing traffic investigations, collecting, analyzing and processing traffic field data, and developing procedures to enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians through the continuous review of evolving traffic and collision patterns and the timely revision of speed limits and upgraded traffic control devices. The unit manages the implementation, monitoring, assessment, refinement and development of installation criteria for traffic control devices and safety initiatives such as the Community Safety Zone Program and Adult Crossing Guard Program to maximize their effectiveness, and is responsible for the investigation of fatal collisions to determine the role of the road and its infrastructure in the cause or severity of those collisions.
You are responsible to ensure the safe and efficient traffic flow in the city by reviewing and responding to inquiries from the public related to traffic concerns on the city's roads. You collect data and information required for each inquiry, fulfill the role of the city's centre of expertise for reviewing, analyzing and recommending the installation of the appropriate traffic control measures to alleviate the inquiries, and operate a microcomputer to process, retrieve, analyze and convey information for each inquiry. You also ensure traffic control measures are installed correctly on the city's streets, represent the branch from a traffic operations perspective for specific traffic studies and projects, and assist in preparing/amending policies related to the installation of traffic control measures and/or participate in special study assignments. In addition, you review, analyze and recommend conditions of approval for new subdivisions and site plan applications, and research and prepare major reports and presentations, written correspondence and reports to committee, council and the general public, related to traffic operations.
Completion of 3 year community college diploma in Transportation Engineering Technology or Civil Engineering Technology
Minimum of 5 years of experience in traffic investigations, traffic operations or an equivalent transportation-related field
Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with OACETT KNOWLEDGE
Data collection, statistical analysis, and operational problem investigation techniques
Fundamentals of traffic engineering
Road network throughout the City of Ottawa
Database management techniques
Ontario Highway Traffic Act and Traffic Manual, city's Traffic and Parking By-law
Departmental policies and procedures
Various computer applications - TSIPS, RTS, WORD, EXCEL, MAP, SAS
Industry-related analysis tools - Canadian Capacity Guide
Ability to analyze/summarize survey data in an organized, clear, and concise manner
Discuss and liaise with persons in government, private sector and the general public
Work individually and follow instructions with minimum supervision
Supervise summer students, as required
Write legibly, prepare exhibits and produce scale/engineering drawings
Work overtime, including occasional weekends, as required
Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
