Tetra Tech is adding a Senior Fisheries and Aquatics Biologist to our Environment & Water – Biological Sciences team based in Vancouver, BC.
This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with deep experience navigating complex environmental legislation and building effective relationships with federal, provincial, and municipal agencies. You will lead multidisciplinary projects, shape regulatory strategy, and support sustainable resource development across Western Canada.
The salary range for this position is $120,000 - $145,000 per year. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
Your Role
Lead aquatic baseline studies, fish habitat assessments, and aquatic effects monitoring programs.
Design and implement fish habitat offsetting design and monitoring programs, field programs including fish and fish habitat surveys, water quality sampling, and aquatic invertebrate assessments.
Prepare and review technical reports, regulatory submissions, and environmental assessments.
Serve as the primary liaison with government agencies such as DFO, BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, and others.
Interpret and apply relevant legislation and policy (e.g., Fisheries Act, Water Sustainability Act, Species at Risk Act).
Support permitting processes including Water Act Approvals, Fisheries Act Authorizations, and Environmental Impact Assessments.
Lead or support stakeholder engagement, including Indigenous consultation and coordination with regulatory bodies.
Project Manage projects of varying size and complexity.
Mentor junior and intermediate staff and contribute to internal training and capacity building.
Support business development through proposal preparation and client relationship management.
Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and technical experts in biology and environmental sciences.
Working with Project Managers/Discipline Teams to maintain quality control of data.
Data analysis and technical reporting (proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
Equipment calibration and maintenance.
Working outside in varied weather conditions.
Excellent attention to detail, and ability to work accurately and quickly to meet deadlines.
Be punctual and able to start work early in the morning.
Oversee Health and Safety for work at the project site.
Willingness to work independently and in a team environment.
Qualifications
Minimum of a B.Sc. in fisheries and aquatic biology.
Minimum of 13 years of experience, with environmental consulting being considered an asset.
Demonstrated experience in regulatory liaison and permitting processes in BC and/or AB.
Registered as a Registered Professional Biologist with the CAB and/or as a Professional Biologist with the ASPB.
Proficient technical writer with a sharp focus on quality.
A strong track record in Health and Safety management on projects.
Strong understanding of aquatic ecosystem dynamics and environmental legislation. Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and must provide a current drivers abstract.
Must be physically capable of working with heavy equipment and sensitive instruments in variable weather and river conditions.
Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, practicing safe work methods.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
