Weekend - Registered Nurse

Reporting to the Community Health Programs Manager, the Community Tuberculosis Health Nurse's primary responsibility will be to support the delivery of sustainable health services and programs for Saskatchewan First Nations. This position supports communities in the prevention, education, and treatment of TB. This position provides professional support, mentoring, and guidance to fulfill policy and guideline requirements of the First Nation and Inuit Health Branch Strategy Against Tuberculosis for First Nations On-reserve and TB Prevention & Control Saskatchewan.
Health Education
Disperse TB needs assessment to Health Directors and CHN's
Provide community and school TB educational opportunities as requested by the community using TB needs assessment
Attend health fairs or community events to provide TB information as requested
Provide support and guidance to the CHNs and Health Directors on TB proposals and activities
Provide TB education sessions to the at risk populations such as people living with HIV, diabetes, heavy alcohol or drug use, renal disease, senior population
Educate parents with young children who live in high incidence communities of the risks of TB and how to protect their child
Provide orientation, training and support to CHNs as required ensuring program standards and expectations of medication administration, delivery, management and delegation are outlined. Collaborate with TBPC RN as necessary
Provide updates on the TB program to CHN's, nurse managers and Health Directors
TBPW Training
Coordinate and provide orientation, training and support for TBPWs. Collaborate with the CHN , TB Coordinator and TBPC RN as necessary
Review roles, responsibilities and standards of care regarding medication administration, delivery and management within the TBPW Handbook
Notify area TBPC RN when TBPW orientation is planned
Updates and/or re-training may be provided sooner at the discretion of the TB RN and when concerns are identified by the CHN and/or TBPC RN.
~ Provide a copy of the TBPW training notification form to the CHN

TB nurse will perform or assist TB screening on all 26 Southern/23 central Saskatchewan First Nation Communities
Provide prompt assistance to Community Health Nurses (CHNs), when requested
Assist the Nurse Managers with occupational health screening as requested
TB nurse maintain liaison with TB prevention and control (TBPC), CHNs and nurse managers regarding any cases and DOT/DOTLI
TB nurse will act as a resource for the CHN, community and clients where contact investigation is occurring
To assist in aggressive contact investigations, ensuring that all children under five are identified, screened, and started on preventative treatment
The TB RN will follow TBPC for DOT procedures
The TB RN will receive notification from TBPC when treatment is initiated for clients with active or latent TB
The TB RN will provide TB orientation/refresher to the community TBPW in conjunction with the SSC Support Worker
The TB RN will receive accountability evaluations (accountability to med delivery and policies and procedures) and forward to TB coordinator
The TB RN will support the TBPW- with section 9 of the TBPW Handbook, collaborate with the CHN and TBPC RN to provide corrective feedback for the TBPW
The TB RN will, upon request, collaborate with community health staff to resolve ongoing performance concerns associated with medication delivery, management and documentation
The TB RN will delegate the delivering of TB medications to the TPBW (this may be allocated to the CHN if there are issues with too many communities)
The TB RN will follow the Saskatchewan TBPC DOT document for medication delivery
The TB RN will arrange for the delivery of the TB medications to SSC
Review the medications for any errors prior to delivering them to community
Connect with TBPC/TBPC pharmacy with any discrepancies immediately to ensure that delivery of DOT continues in a timely manner
The TB RN will ensure TBPW receives the medication in a timely manner
The TB RN will count the TB medications with the TBPW
The TB RN will arrange incentives for clients as requested by community/and or TBPC
The TB RN will provide client education regarding TB, medications and related care as able
The TB RN will maintain and monitor Case Management in the delivery of Direct Observed Treatment (DOT) and Direct Observed Treatment of Latent Tuberculosis Infection (DOTLTI)
Surveillance/Statistics
Ensure on-going collection and submission of TB data to Saskatchewan TB Control
Attend any requests from Regional Office or communities to meet regarding TB programming
Participate in HIV case management
Work with the Regional TB Coordinator and MHO to identify and resolve issues related to TB case management, screening, and surveillance to ensure satisfactory resolution of issues in collaboration with TB Program partners.
Database maintenance of program activities in the communities (providing report on educational activities- needs assessment, health fairs)
The TB Nurse reports to the Zone Nursing Officer at SSC
The TB Nurse will support, and act as a liaison to all TB Program Workers and Community Health Nurses
Practice in accordance with CRNS standards and regulatory requirements
Adhere to policy and procedure regarding medication administration, delivery and management
Connect with TBPC, CHN and TBPC RN as required
Collaborate with TBPC RN, ISC TB Coordinator when client care or management issues need to be resolved. Along with the TBPC RN, determine appropriate course of action which may involve additional training or other intervention(s)
Reinforce accountabilities and standards of care with CHN and TBPW as necessary
Provide insight, knowledge and assistance to TBPC and other partners regarding community dynamics and operations
Maintain and up to date out of office reply on email and coverage plans
Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Minimum of 2 years experience working in the field of Tuberculosis.
Must be a member in good standing with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association.
Management and supervisory experience is an asset.
Demonstrated knowledge and competency in fiscal, program/service planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Knowledge of the political, social, and economic objectives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures will be considered an asset.
Highly self-motivated, and detail-oriented with an attitude for continuous improvement.
Computer skills and knowledge of a variety of computer programs and software.
Some services provided in community setting which present many unknown variables;
Ideally will travel out to communities multiple times per week;
Hours of work may vary, must be willing to travel and work flexible hours, evenings and weekends, and to perform other related duties as required or assigned;
Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) and vulnerable sector check as a condition of employment;
