The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology is a basic science department within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, with a significant independent academic mission, research profile and large graduate and undergraduate program.
The overarching mission of the Department is to champion and enhance innovation in education and research; broaden community engagement; The Laboratory Technician supports the effective operation of cadaveric anatomy teaching laboratories by providing specialized technical assistance in the preparation, delivery, and maintenance of anatomy lab sessions. This position supports increasing instructional demand associated with anatomical teaching across Medicine, Dentistry, residency, and undergraduate programs by ensuring laboratory spaces, specimens, equipment, and materials are prepared safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established protocols. The role contributes to high-quality anatomy education through hands-on technical support, adherence to health and safety standards, and the respectful handling of human anatomical specimens.
4 year university bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences, medical sciences, anatomy, or relevant field with demonstrated training or experience in human cadaveric anatomy OR A Funeral Services Education Diploma with relevant applied experience supporting human cadaveric work

2 years of experience working with human cadaveric material in a teaching, clinical, funeral services, or research laboratory environment
~ Experience supporting cadaveric anatomy teaching laboratories in a post-secondary or clinical environment is preferred

Knowledge of, and ability to use, anatomical dissection instruments and specialized laboratory tools to support cadaveric teaching laboratories, specimen preparation, and safe use of tools and equipment in an anatomy learning environment
Demonstrated knowledge of common laboratory practices, including safe handling procedures, use of personal protective equipment, WHMIS, MSDS, and adherence to health, safety, and biohazard protocols
Ability to prepare, set up, support, and dismantle anatomy teaching laboratories according to course schedules, established procedures, and faculty instructions
Strong technical aptitude with the ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot specialized anatomy laboratory equipment and dissection tools, and to identify issues requiring escalation or service
Effective communication skills to explain technical and safety concepts clearly to students, teaching assistants, residents, faculty, and colleagues with varying levels of technical knowledge
Ability to instruct and demonstrate procedures related to equipment use, dissection techniques, and laboratory safety while ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to follow formal procedures, maintain accurate records, and ensure laboratory readiness across multiple concurrent teaching activities
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, prioritize competing demands, and adapt to changing schedules or urgent operational needs in a fast-paced instructional environment
Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to resolve routine issues related to lab preparation, equipment use, and clean-up using established practices
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a technical team, supporting colleagues and contributing to shared laboratory operations and continuous improvement
Strong interpersonal skills, including professionalism, courtesy, tact, discretion, and sensitivity when interacting with residents and students, colleagues, faculty, physicians, industry, donors, and donors’ families
Ability to communicate and work in a manner consistent with confidentiality requirements, particularly when handling donor-related information and sensitive materials
Competence with computer applications and software relevant to the role, with the ability to learn new systems used for documentation, inventory tracking, and communication
Demonstrated initiative, reliability, and follow-through, with the motivation to learn new techniques, adapt to evolving instructional needs, and contribute positively to department goals
Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours as required to support laboratory schedules, including occasional evening, weekend, or on-call responsibilities
