Occupational Health Nurse & Safety Advisor (permanent Full Time)

Job Summary:
The Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Advisor is responsible for providing professional guidance, technical expertise, and practical support to ensure the organization meets its obligations under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code. This role supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of workplace health and safety programs across multiple office and community-based locations, including rural and remote sites.
With a strong focus on hazard identification, risk mitigation, compliance, and fostering a proactive safety culture, the OHS Advisor ensures consistent standards and practices are applied across all facilities and service environments, including Child and Family Services and Indigenous service delivery settings.
The incumbent works collaboratively with leadership, supervisors, frontline staff, and the Joint Health & Safety Committee to promote a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment across all operations and geographic locations. This includes conducting site visits, supporting local safety leads, addressing location-specific risks, and ensuring alignment with organizational policies while respecting culturally grounded practices, community protocols, and the unique considerations of service delivery within Indigenous communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide expert OHS advice and guidance in alignment with Alberta legislation and best practices.
Support the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of OHS programs, policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
Assist departments with hazard identification, risk assessments, and implementing effective control measures.
Monitor compliance with applicable provincial legislation, standards, and internal requirements, promoting shared accountability through the internal responsibility system.
Conduct and support workplace inspections, audits, and hazard assessments, ensuring corrective actions are documented and completed.
Support incident, injury, and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
Develop, coordinate, and deliver safety training and new hire orientations.
Lead and provide guidance to the Joint Health and Safety Committee and Health & Safety Representatives, including meeting participation and action-item follow-up.
Support regulatory inspections and external audits, including coordination and documentation as required.
Maintain accurate OHS documentation, records, metrics, and analyze trends to recommend proactive improvements.
Supports the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) framework by collaborating with cross-functional teams, leadership, and community partners to develop, implement, and strengthen emergency preparedness. Ensuring plans reflect organizational risks, community realities, and culturally appropriate response practices.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support organizational objectives.
Qualifications and Skills:
Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in an occupational health and safety role.
Strong working knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation, with the ability to interpret and apply requirements in practical, operational settings to support ongoing compliance.
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or working towards certification.
Experience supporting multi-site or complex operations is an asset.
Requirements:

Class 5 License with a clear Drivers abstract.
Availability to travel and work outside of business hours when necessary.
