The Alberta Human Rights Act establishes the Alberta Human Rights Commission to carry out functions under the Act. The Commission is an independent Commission created by the Government of Alberta. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination and human rights tribunal hearings.

In your role as a Human Rights Officer you will respond to confidential human rights and discrimination inquiries from the public. This includes members of groups protected by human rights legislation employers service providers landlords unions and others. You will provide information on the Alberta Human Rights Act explain human rights principles such as the duty to accommodate assist inquirers in understanding the Commissions complaint process and make referrals to other organizations.
You will manage a caseload where you will assess complaint forms to determine if they meet the requirements of the Act and the Commissions Bylaws review responses to complaints and make triage decisions. You will also provide conciliation services to resolve accepted complaints and/or perform administrative investigations where you gather and analyze relevant information and documents from parties to complaints. You will interpret and apply legislation caselaw legal principles and policy.

University degree in a related field (e.g. law social sciences etc.) plus 4 years of related experience such as in administrative investigations conciliations mediations legal work caseload management and/or working in similar government program service delivery; Our ideal candidate will have the following assets:
Experience with the Alberta Human Rights Act or human rights principles and
Experience including lived or working experience with diverse communities such as people with mental or physical disabilities racialized communities Indigenous people 2SLGBTQ communities people with lower socio-economic status and other marginalized groups.
Hours of Work : Monday - Friday 8:15 am - 4:30 pm (36.25 /week)
One (1) temporary position (up to 1 year) is available.
