Title: Bilingual Supportive Counsellor
Location: Walker House – Hospice Niagara, Welland, ON
Position Type: Full-Time, Temporary ( 6 Months contract with possible extension)
Reports To: Director of Care
Hospice Niagara’s clinical team includes counsellors specializing in psychosocial, bereavement, and spiritual care who support individuals and their loved ones through the physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and practical challenges of illness, death, and bereavement. The Supportive Counsellor will work at Walker House, Hospice Niagara’s newest residential hospice site in Welland, ON . This includes supporting psychological, emotional, social, spiritual, and grief-related needs for clients and their families, while continuously adapting supports to meet changing circumstances.
This position requires fluency in both French and English , to ensure accessibility of services for Francophone clients and families in the Niagara region.
Provide person-centred, strength-based, and solution-focused support through clinical modalities such as individual, couple, and group counselling
Guide clients and families through practical end-of-life decisions including financial planning, power of attorney, wills, funeral planning, and legacy wishes
Deliver spiritual companioning, emotional support, and grief counselling
Conduct psychosocial-spiritual assessments, care planning, and ongoing follow-up
Provide public education and promote hospice palliative care in the community
Collaborate with community partners to support equitable access to care
Participate in internal committees (e.g., Ethics, Equity, Wellness)
Commitment to ethics in hospice palliative care
Demonstrates understanding of equity, inclusion, and cultural safety in care
Experience building therapeutic relationships based on trust and empathy
Strong documentation and administrative abilities
Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and database systems
Flexibility to work shifts (days, evenings, weekends, holidays) as needed
Fluency in both English and French is required ; additional languages are an asset
Maintains healthy coping and personal self-care related to loss and bereavement
Education, Training & Experience
Master’s Degree (preferred) in Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, Nursing, Theology, or related disciplines
Certification or training in Spiritual Direction, Grief and Bereavement, or Theology (considered an asset)
Experience in hospice palliative care, end-of-life care, or oncology across health care settings
Supervision experience and strong consultation skills with teams or community providers
Additional Assets (Preferred or Required Within 12 Months of Hire)
First Aid / CPR Certification
Mask Fit Testing
Safe Food Handling Certificate

L’équipe clinique de Hospice Niagara comprend des conseillers spécialisés en soins psychosociaux, en deuil et en soins spirituels, qui soutiennent les individus et leurs proches dans les défis physiques, émotionnels, psychologiques, spirituels et pratiques liés à la maladie, à la fin de vie et au deuil. Cette équipe veille à ce que les soins soient centrés sur la personne, équitables et holistiques.
Le ou la conseiller(ère) en soutien travaillera à la Maison Walker , le nouvel hospice résidentiel de Hospice Niagara situé à Welland, ON . Cela comprend le soutien aux besoins psychologiques, émotionnels, sociaux, spirituels et liés au deuil des clients et de leurs familles, tout en adaptant continuellement les interventions en fonction de l’évolution des circonstances.
Ce poste exige une maîtrise du français et de l’anglais , afin d’assurer l’accessibilité des services aux clients et familles francophones de la région de Niagara.
Fournir un soutien centré sur la personne, basé sur les forces et axé sur les solutions à l’aide de différentes approches cliniques telles que le counseling individuel, en couple ou en groupe
Favoriser le bien-être de l’équipe interdisciplinaire par la formation, les séances de débriefing et le soutien à l’autosoins
Offrir de l’éducation au public et promouvoir les soins palliatifs dans la communauté
Compétences et qualités requises
Compréhension des principes d’équité, d’inclusion et de sécurité culturelle dans les soins
Maîtrise des outils informatiques, y compris Outlook, Word et les bases de données
Flexibilité pour travailler selon des horaires variés (jours, soirs, fins de semaine, jours fériés)
Maîtrise du français et de l’anglais requise ; la connaissance d'autres langues constitue un atout
Formation, formation continue et expérience
Maîtrise (préférée) en travail social, counseling, psychologie, soins infirmiers, théologie ou domaines connexes
Certification ou formation en accompagnement spirituel, deuil et pertes, ou théologie (un atout)
Expérience dans les soins palliatifs, les soins de fin de vie ou l’oncologie dans divers milieux de soins de santé
Expérience en supervision et solides compétences en consultation auprès d’équipes ou de fournisseurs de services communautaires
Expérience démontrée en recherche ou en évaluation de programmes, y compris les pratiques fondées sur des données probantes
