Business Development Representative, Government

Alberta Innovates

Alberta Innovates is seeking a Technology (Business) Development Advisor (TDA) to join our Entrepreneurial Investments team. TDAs play an exciting role in Alberta’s innovation ecosystem by engaging, advising, and coaching scalable Technology and knowledge based Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) in the areas of business, product development and commercialization activities. The TDA is a connector who creates links between business support services, professionals, and programs from the Provincial and Federal Government, Colleges, Universities, non-profits and industry contacts.

This is a full-time position to be based in rural Northern Alberta (north of Edmonton) and support regions from Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Northeast Alberta. The ability to connect and coach others based on your previous business experience with technology-based companies.
A network that would provide value to new founders and scaling businesses.
An ability to understand emerging technologies and coach companies in commercializing technologies in these areas.

Our subsidiary, InnoTech Alberta, offers a diversified range of scientific engineering and technological research and testing capabilities, and the facilities to support technology scale-up. Our multidisciplinary team has the depth of experience to work across all sectors, from energy to health to food and fibre. InnoTech Alberta offers you access to research talent, technical expertise, and unique facilities that can help accelerate technology development that serves both the private and public sector.

This may include expertise on business plan development, financials, marketing, and sales, including customer validation testing.
Coaching the client through their business and technology readiness journey
Developing external networks and liaising with internal and external clients to recommend funding opportunities aligned with Alberta Innovates mandate and outcomes.
Working synergistically with the Regional Innovation Networks for the benefit of the client
A bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution.

  • 10+ years in business, management consulting or founding a technology.
  • 5 + years in senior management and/or business coaching experience
  • Continuing education related to business and entrepreneurship.
  • Strong account management experience combined with a creative approach to business.
  • Demonstrated coaching, constructive feedback, and mentoring skills.
  • Strong community network to support building collaboration and build synergies.
  • Travel is required to attend events or meetings as required.
