Job Summary

The Indigenous Studies Program at McMaster University invites applications from an outstanding established scholar for a tenure stream or tenured appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The Indigenous Studies Program is committed to the delivery of an exceptional undergraduate experience for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners, which draws upon the expertise of Indigenous scholars and community knowledge holders alike. The Indigenous Studies Program is one of the longest-standing Indigenous Studies programs in Canada. We seek a candidate that builds upon our existing areas of strength in traditional ecological knowledge, health and well-being, policy, governance, gender and sexuality, literary studies, material knowledge production, Indigenous theory and methodologies, Indigenous ways of knowing.

Applications are welcome from any field, but those with training in political science and a primary specialization in Indigenous forms of Governance, are encouraged to apply. The appointment will be joint between the Indigenous Studies Program and the relevant department (e.g., political science, history, anthropology, psychology), with a teaching commitment to the Indigenous Studies Program and an expectation of participation in the activities and initiatives of the Indigenous community at McMaster.

The successful candidate will join a community of leading Indigenous scholars from across multiple disciplines. In addition to the Indigenous Studies Program, the McMaster Indigenous Research Institute supports community capacity building, promotes and fosters innovation, collaboration and partnership in Indigenous research, and acts to develop strong, sustainable Indigenous research infrastructure. As a full-time faculty member, and consistent with McMaster’s vision of being a student-centred, research-intensive university, the successful candidate is expected to develop an innovative program of research yielding significant peer-reviewed publications, to attract external peer-reviewed research funding, and to demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development, including teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising graduate students.

Qualifications

The position is open to all applicants with expertise in the area of Indigenous Studies, though as noted we are especially interested in candidates with a specialization in Political Science and Indigenous forms of Governance. Successful candidates will hold a PhD. Salary is commensurate with qualification and experience.
