Mechanical Systems Engineer

We recently secured a NATO DIANA innovation contract to accelerate commercialization efforts and demonstrate our Infrastructure Independent Energy (IIE) concepts in real-world applications. We are seeking a versatile Mechanical Systems Engineer with broad theoretical and practical engineering skills and a strong bias toward “ getting to done .” You will work in a very small team to design, build, integrate, and test hydrogen-related systems ranging from 1 kW to 100 kW. You will be responsible for incorporating technologies such as electrolysers, fuel cells, sensors, actuators, thermal management and embedded controls into complete systems . We are looking for someone who has designed, built, tested and operated electro-mechanical machines in the real world.

You’ll work across multiple disciplines—mechanical, electrical, controls, pneumatics, and hydraulics—to support equipment development efforts, field deployments, and demonstrations across diverse use cases including charging equipment, IIE systems, and retrofits for vehicles and vessels. Domestic and international travel (up to 15%) will be required to support field deployments and demonstrations.

Design & Engineering

• Develop equipment and system designs, including engineering drawings, calculations, and BOMs. Your focus will be mechanical (structures, mechanisms) as well as gas piping, hydraulics, pneumatics etc.
• Produce technical project deliverables (documentation, drawings, calculations)
• Support rapid concept development and create preliminary 3D models for Business Development needs. Actively contribute to rapid-fire Q&A or brainstorming sessions. Build, assemble, and integrate electro‑mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
• Troubleshoot common electro-mechanical problems such as sensor errors, actuator friction etc.
• Testing & Troubleshooting
• Conduct system testing based on engineering requirements
• Analyze system performance data and resolve technical issues

Project Execution

• Work with & alongside senior experts in their field
• Support field deployments and demonstrations of H2M technology

· Contribute to quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives

Comfortable thinking quickly on your feet and responding to a variety of technical questions in a high stakes environment.

• Able to clearly & quickly convey technical concepts to a multi-disciplinary audience in meetings – using whiteboard sketches or equivalent
• This role is based in Burnaby, BC and requires regular in‑office presence

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics or equivalent

• 5+ years of commercial experience working with 1kW to 100kW systems
• Mechanical system design, build & test of deployment ready equipment. Structures, integration of 3rd party equipment, placement of components, mechanical & electrical interfaces etc.
• Fundamentals of pressure & flow control required. Competence with electrical systems - understanding electrical power in a physical system. Example: what size electrical motor should I specify for doing 1kW of mechanical work? Strong 3D CAD modelling skills (electro-mechanical systems)
• Demonstrated ability to deliver project outcomes on time
• Hands-on field experience deploying and operating equipment
• Strong documentation and communication skills using MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

3D printing

• Welding & metal fabrication
• Familiarity with fuel cells, electrolysers and associated test systems
• Experience with solar or other clean energy technologies
• Required Technical Competencies (Screening Level)

Candidates will be asked to solve practical, multi‑disciplinary engineering scenarios during the interview. Whiteboard complete system architectures (fluid, electrical, and thermal domains) for hydrogen energy systems ranging from 1 kW to 100 kW, including fuel cells, electrolysers, compressors/boosters, storage, and balance‑of‑plant components.

Diagnose field issues using only first‑principles reasoning and basic tools (e.g., multimeter, gauges, PLC I/O), including electrical noise, grounding faults, sensor interference, pressure/flow anomalies, and control logic failures.

Create P&IDs and control logic for compressors, boosters, electrolysers, and fuel cell systems, including interlocks, permissives, emergency shutdown logic, and safe sequencing.

Provide 2-3 examples of projects where you integrated multi-disciplinary systems.
