Pay Grade The annual salary range is $70,437- $112,872 (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications, experience, and the placement criteria of Article 14 of the NICFA Collective agreement.
Position Summary The Instructor, Indigenous Education is responsible for the respectful delivery, facilitation, and evaluation of Indigenous‑led, distinctions‑based, non-credit learning experience at North Island College, aligned to Working Together: North Island College’s Indigenization Plan (2021–2026) . This role is grounded in relationships with Indigenous Nations whose territories the college operates on and upholds the protocols, teachings, and curriculum integrity co-developed with those Nations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the Indigenous Education Council (IEC).
The instructor will facilitate Journeying to Reconciliation (a mandatory institutional learning experience delivered in Brightspace) and support the delivery of local First Nations digital core-competency modules. This role is a relational, protocol-based facilitation role situated outside of for-credit instruction and focused on carrying out responsibilities entrusted by community.
The position collaborates closely with NIC Elders in Residence, Knowledge Keepers, the Indigenous Education Facilitator, the IEC, and other partners to ensure the delivery remains Indigenous-led, trauma-aware, antiracist, and accessible—and that feedback loops remain accountable to community. Prepare and facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning in Brightspace and Kaltura sessions for Journeying to Reconciliation and local Nations modules.

Local Nations Focus (content areas)
Deliver modules that explore pre‑colonial history, language, culture, impacts of colonization, resilience, and present‑day contexts for:
Support learners to connect personal roles, responsibilities, and commitments to Indigenization and reconciliation within their work units.
Provide clear expectations, timely feedback, and supportive coaching to learners; hold office hours and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
Ensure the learning environment is accessible and adheres to Universal Design for Learning ( UDL ) and adult learning best practices.
Coordination & Quality Assurance
Coordinate session schedules, guest contributors, technology needs, and materials; ensure captioning and accessibility for digital content.
Gather and integrate feedback from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Nations, and learners to support continuous improvement; provide progress summaries and facilitation notes to Indigenous Education.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold community protocols, NIC policies, and ethical obligations connected to Indigenous‑led curriculum.
Work closely throughout the process with the Indigenous Education Facilitator , Indigenous Education staff, and community partners to align delivery with established curriculum.
Contribute to iterative refinement by flagging content or flow adjustments to the Curriculum Developer/Indigenous Education team.
Required Education & Experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience teaching or facilitating Indigenous‑focused non-credit (preferred) or credited courses or professional learning at the post‑secondary level (or comparable institutional setting).
- Demonstrated experience facilitating in digital/online environments (e.g., Applied knowledge of local First Nations in the NIC service region (culture, language, history, protocols, and current context).
- Proven ability to apply UDL , adult learning principles, and metacognitive strategies in facilitation.
- Strong skills in organization, planning, time management, and project coordination .
- Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis on Indigenous Knowledge is desirable;
- Master’s Degree in Indigenous Education/Indigenous Language is desirable.
A comprehensive, applied understanding of local Indigenous ways of knowing and being , Indigenous pedagogy, and distinctions‑based approaches.
Capacity to steward Nation-developed curriculum with care, including upholding ceremonial protocols, community-defined expectations, and ethical delivery practices.
Experience working closely and respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, scholars, and Indigenous communities in protocol‑informed ways.
Proficiency with learning technologies and standard computer applications; Strong relationship‑building skills, humility, reflective practice, and accountability to community guidance.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards related to Indigenous‑led curriculum and community‑shared knowledge.
Creative, engaging approaches to adult learning in live and online formats.
Assets (Strongly Preferred)
Established and ongoing relationships with one or more of the Nations whose modules are being delivered, such as K’ómoks First Nation, Ligʷiɫdax̌ʷ Nations (We Wai Kai, We Wai Kum, Kwiakah), Kwagu’ł First Nation and Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw Peoples, c̓išaaʔatḥ (Tseshaht), Hupačasath First Nation, or other Nuu-chah-nulth communities.
Experience piloting and refining curriculum with live groups and incorporating feedback from community partners.
Familiarity with NIC’s institutional context, governance, and Indigenous education history.
Training in antiracist pedagogy , trauma‑aware practice , restorative or transformative approaches to group learning.

This role may require occasional travel to other NIC campuses or community locations.
Evening or weekend sessions may be scheduled to accommodate learner and community availability .
The instructor will be supported by the Indigenous Education Facilitator and broader Indigenous Education team for coordination, tech setup, and protocol guidance.
