Dockworkers facilitate the loading and unloading of cargo at ports, ensuring efficient and safe handling of goods. Responsibilities include operating heavy machinery, maintaining inventory, and adhering to safety protocols.

Responsibilities:

  • determine the appropriate loading or unloading sequence of freight onto/from trailers
  • operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks
  • ensure accuracy of freight handling by verifying shipment information against shipping documents
  • sort and segregate freight by destination and load onto trailers for delivery
  • maintain a clean and safe work environment by keeping the dock area clear of debris and hazardous materials
  • communicate with drivers and other warehouse personnel to coordinate the movement of freight
  • perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, such as inventory control and cycle counting
  • adhere to company policies and procedures, including safety regulations and standard operating procedures

Requirements:

  • demonstrated ability to operate forklifts and other heavy equipment safely and efficiently
  • experience with loading and unloading cargo from trucks and ships
  • ability to read and interpret shipping documents, such as bills of lading and shipping manifests
  • physical strength and stamina to lift heavy objects and work in all weather conditions
  • strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording inventory and tracking shipments
  • willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment
  • adherence to safety protocols and procedures at all times
