Ironworker-Reinforcing Rebar professionals are skilled tradespeople who specialize in reinforcing steel bars used in concrete construction. They are responsible for cutting, bending, and placing rebar to reinforce concrete structures, such as buildings, bridges, and roads. Ironworker-Reinforcing Rebar professionals must have excellent attention to detail, physical strength, and a strong work ethic.

Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints and construction plans to determine the location and amount of reinforcement steel required.
  • Cut, bend, and secure reinforcing steel rods to form grids or reinforcing cages using pliers, wire, or foot-operated shears.
  • Install reinforcing steel bars or mesh in freshly poured concrete or masonry structures, following blueprints and building codes.
  • Align and anchor steel bars or mesh to reinforce concrete structures, using wire, epoxy, or welding equipment.
  • Position and secure steel bars or mesh in forms in order to reinforce concrete structures.
  • Check and maintain equipment and tools assigned for work, and report any problems or malfunctions.
  • Coordinate with other construction workers to ensure that reinforcing steel is installed properly and on schedule.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations, and wear protective gear such as hard hats, boots, and gloves while working.

Requirements:

  • Physical fitness and strength to carry out tasks that involve lifting, bending, and using heavy tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations to ensure a safe work environment for themselves and others
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and drawings to determine the layout and placement of reinforcing bars
  • Experience with cutting, bending, and shaping reinforcing bars using hand and power tools
  • Familiarity with different types of reinforcing bars and their properties to select the appropriate material for a specific job
  • Good communication skills to work effectively with other ironworkers, construction workers, and supervisors
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and at heights
  • Certification or training in reinforcing steel installation is preferred but not required
