The second engineer is a key role in maritime operations, responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of mechanical and electrical equipment on ships. They conduct repairs, oversee operations, and maintain technical documentation to guarantee vessel safety and efficiency. Responsibilities:

  • Assist the chief engineer in the day-to-day running of the vessel's engineering department.
  • Monitor and maintain the ship's mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Implement and oversee preventative maintenance programs to ensure equipment is kept in good working order.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and standards, including regular safety drills.
  • Train and supervise junior engineering staff.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that arise during the voyage.
  • Keep accurate records of all maintenance and repair work carried out.

Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or related field
  • At least 2-3 years of experience as a Second Engineer on a vessel
  • In-depth knowledge of vessel machinery and equipment maintenance and repair
  • Proficiency in technical and engineering software and tools
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Valid STCW certification and other relevant licenses
