The Assistant Park Caretaker reports directly to the Area/District Supervisor or designate as specified. As the Assistant Park Caretaker, you are responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the designated Day Use Park(s) including: all infrastructure, vehicles, grounds and equipment. 

Primary Accountabilities

You will also be responsible for:

• Infrastructure maintenance, vehicles, grounds and equipment
• Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and department policies.
• Actively participating in the implementation of departmental OH&S Policy and Programs.
• Providing visitor information.
• Monitoring park activities for regulation compliance.
• Advising visitors of park regulations and reporting non-compliance to conservation officers.

Qualifications and Experience

This could be the right job for you if you have the following skills and experience:

• Two (2) years of related experience, which can include:
  • General carpentry, building and grounds maintenance, general machine maintenance.
  • Use of tractors, ride-on mowers, push mowers, string trimmers and hand and power tools.
• Valid NS Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
• Valid (Standard) First Aid Certificate and WHMIS training.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods and sanitation requirements.
• Customer service training.
• Training, experience in or demonstrated ability for ensuring compliance of Regulations in a public setting; and
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

• Duties often require working irregularly scheduled hours, weekends, evenings and holidays. Must be willing to attend department training in duties related to this position.
• As part of a team, the Assistant Park Caretaker is expected to work effectively with due regard to personal and co-worker safety and cooperation.  Most tasks will be in an outdoor environment and may involve strenuous activities in varied weather conditions and extremes. 
• Employee walks for extended periods of time and distance over both even and uneven terrain while patrolling the park.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 lbs.
• All personnel may be called upon for assistance in emergency situations.

Additional Information

There is one (1) permanent seasonal opportunity available at Risser's Beach Camping Park. This is a seasonal position, with an anticipated end date for this season of October 17, 2026.

Pay Grade:MOS 09  

Salary Range:  $1,896.89 - $1,942.36 Bi-Weekly
