PURPOSE OF POSITION:

This position is responsible for the overall development and implementation, of a Secwepemctsín educational and cultural strategic plan and services for Esk'etemc community members - this will involve facilitating speakers to teach the language, curriculum development, researching, and transcribing. As well, the candidate must have the passion and commitment to participate inEsk'etemc community language champion programs such as “Elders Speak” and mentorships to ensure the perpetuation, promotion, and revitalization of Secwepemctsín through various projects, programs, and marketing of the language. It is high priority for the candidate to increase the number of Esk'etemc speakers and to follow the developed language fluency and revitalization plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (95%): Overseeing the coordination, facilitation, creation, and implementation of language educational programs for Secwepemctsín, with a focus on the dialect of the Esk'etemc, as identified by theEsk'etemc and in collaboration with the Language and Culture coordinator and Education Director.

Strategic Leadership:

• Fundraising by writing and submitting proposals for the purpose of teaching Secwe?pemc language and culture, developing curriculum, and submitting all reporting requirements in a timely manner - in accordance with Esk'etemc language revitalization plan
• Develop a curriculum for all age groups, learning styles, and ability.
• Establish and maintain excellent rapport with colleagues and clients.
• Assist the Esk'etemc Language and Culture program Coordinator and Multimedia Specialist to develop an Esk'etemc Publishing Plan to produce authentic Esk'etemc resource material to support teaching/education programs, including research.
• Implement and promote the Language, History and Culture revitalization plan.
• Uphold the Shuswap Nation Declaration to work in unity to preserve, record, enhance and perpetuate our Secwépemc language, history, and culture.
• To provide sound leadership and foster team spirit so the staff will help to continually review and update our L&C strategic plan.

• Promotes and enhances the integrity of the Western Dialect of the Secwepemctsín and ensure that staff and members are given priority in participating in the L&C programs and services.

Community Relations and Outreach Activities:

• Initiate outreach activities to attract Esk'etemc language learners.
• Support the Elders and language champions of Esk'etemc community members.
• Work with the language and culture staff to increase the number of Esk'etemc language learners and fluent speakers of all ages within the community.
• Participate in inter-community communication by identifying language champions and building rapport with local elders, fluent speakers, traditional knowledge holders, and cultural experts.
• Participate in Esk'etemc Ceremonies and Welcoming for internal and external community partnerships and stakeholders.
• Work closely with and collaborate with on-site elders when developing curriculum.
• Assist with special projects as required.
• Work with the Language and Culture Coordinator, Language teachers and staff at Sxoxomic and other Community Services with on the land projects as a Secwépemc Curriculum

Specialist. Help facilitate and teach cultural activities while using Secwepemctsín when doing the work.

Educating the Public:

• Mobilize the community goal of returning Secwepemctsín to everyday use and intergenerational transmission by organizing and facilitating language classes.
• Coordinate with the Language and Culture Coordinator and assist in facilitating regular language classes for Esk'et community. Informal classes in the evening and sometimes on weekends, depending on cultural or on the land camps, no rigid guidelines, learning outcomes, and reporting criteria.

Research, Reporting and Administrative Policies:

• Develop an annual teacher plan, including measurable goals and objectives, and present to

L&C Dept

• Assist with gathering information for proposals that focus on the enhancement and revival of Secwépemc language, history, and culture.
• Assist with gathering information to update the Language Status Assessment for the

Esk'etemc community.

• Responsible for providing written and verbal reports, including an annual report by March

31st - including statistics related to Esk'etemc learners/speakers.

• Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Esk'etemc policies, standards, and procedures, and as directed by the Language and Culture Coordinator and Education

Department Manager.

• Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Language & Culture

Department and Esk'etemc.

Other related duties as required. (5%) Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

• Master's Degree or Enrolled in a Master's Degree in Linguistics or Curriculum Development and at minimum 1 year of experience and knowledge in the Secwépemc language.
• A willingness to be mentored in curriculum development is required.
• Must be willing to continually upgrade knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Must pass Criminal Record Check.
• Must have a current valid BC Driver's License and reliable transportation.

Skills and Abilities:

• Must be passionate and dedicated to the enhancement, perpetuation, and revitalization of Esk'etemc dialect of the Secwépemc Language.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage concurrent activities, keeping staff and colleagues informed.
• Current involvement in the Secwépemc Nation.
• Must have good research skills.
• Communicate effectively with an audience.
• Good communication skills, oral and written communication skills in Secwepemctsín is an asset.
• Strong analytical, organizational, coordinating and planning skills.
• Proven ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
• Extensive knowledge of Secwe?pemc culture, history, and lifestyle is required.
• Extensive knowledge of proper Secwépemc protocols when interacting with Elders,

Fluent Speakers, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers.

• Ability to work independently with strong tact and diplomacy.
• Must have strong teamwork and cooperation, service orientation and problem solving and judgement skills with the ability to work in multi-cultural settings.
• Travel may be a requirement (Not an 8 am to 4 pm work requirement as classes/culture camps may in the evening and weekends.

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts - 7 hours/day (70 hours bi-weekly). Non-normal shifts may be required.
