About the Opportunity

The City of Penticton is looking for a seasonal Parks Maintenance I , based in Penticton, B.C.

Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the Parks Maintenance I performs a variety of tasks in the day-to-day preparation and maintenance of sports fields, parks, cemetery and green spaces within the City of Penticton. Duties will include operating small tools and vehicles, and performing maintenance and construction duties relating to municipal parks operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Performs Parks maintenance duties, including planting, weeding, edging, cutting lawns, cleanup of public areas, beach cleaning and garbage collection.
• Operates various hand tools such as weedeaters, edgers, chainsaws, lawn mowers, etc.
• Assists Parks Irrigation crews in the installation, maintenance and winterizing of all underground irrigation systems.
• Performs minor repairs to Parks equipment and fixtures such as picnic tables, life rafts, buoys and outdoor recreation facilities.
• Completes miscellaneous pick up and delivery assignments using a half 1 ton truck as required.
• Assists skilled workers with their tasks as required.
• Directs traffic, places barricades and warning lights around work projects.
• Sweeps streets and sidewalks by hand and shovels snow as required.
• Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

• Necessary knowledge of general construction or underground irrigation systems or landscape gardening or equipment operation.
• Knowledge necessary to operate small tractors, chainsaws, lawnmowers, weed eaters and other small equipment used in Parks operations.
• Necessary knowledge of safe working and operating procedures related to equipment and tools and work procedures required to assure public safety.
• Ability to maintain positive relationships.
• Ability to perform heavy manual work outside, in all types of weather conditions and in the presence of crowds.
• Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
• Ability to exercise courtesy and tact in the exchange of information with other city employees, the employees of private companies and members of the public.
• Ability to exercise independence of judgement in completion of assigned tasks.

Required Education, Training & Experience:

• Completion of senior secondary school education.
• B.C. Driver's License minimum Class 5.

Compensation based on skills and experience is an hourly rate of $28.55 (Pay Grade 4, 40 hours per week, CUPE) , along with a host of excellent benefits including:
