About the Role
The Rooted Birthworkers Collective Inc. is seeking a compassionate and highly
organized Doula to join our Doula Program. This casual position is ideal for an
aspiring newly trained doula who is passionate about reproductive justice
and has strong coordination and communication skills.
As a Doula, you will provide culturally grounded, full-spectrum doula care toBlack and/or racialized parents and families, with a specific focus on trauma-
informed, gender-inclusive, and client-centered support.
Key Responsibilities
Provide full-spectrum doula care (prenatal, birth, postpartum, loss, and abortion support) to a caseload of Black and racialized families in- person, by video call, text message, phone call in the client’s home, community settings or the RBC main office location;
Offer in-home, virtual, or in-community support based on client needs;
Attend births in hospitals, Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre, or home settings and offer continuous emotional, physical, and informational support;
Accompany clients to prenatal or medical appointments when requested;
Be on-call for clients assigned to you for birth support;
Participate in team check-ins, case reviews, reflective supervision, and trainings as required;
Maintain accurate client records and case notes in alignment with program protocols in a timeline fashion and in accordance with the organization’s guidelines and policies; and
Collaborate with the Executive Director and other doulas to ensure smooth care transitions and team-based support.
Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years’ experience supporting Black and/or racialized children and families; experience in full-spectrum doula care is considered an asset, preferably in a community-based setting;
Must identify as a member of a BIPOC community;
Certified Doula from a recognized organization (e.g., DONA, CAPPA, Birthing Advocacy Doula Training, Doula School, etc.), or willingness to complete certification within 6 months of hire;
Completion of college and/or university education in a relevant field such as healthcare, social work, gender studies, or public health would be an asset;
Verbal and written fluency English and one of the following languages French, Swahili, Arabic, Kirundi, or Creole;
Must provide a favorable a vulnerable sector police record check prior to the date of hire;
Hold and maintain standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification;
Active membership with the Association of Ontario Doulas (or willingness to obtain membership prior to the start date) is required;
Hold and maintain $2M professional liability insurance for the duration of your employment;
Hold and maintain a valid Ontario G2 or G Class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle for attending client visits and community events, or access to other reliable forms of transportation;
Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and gender-inclusive care;
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities and timelines;
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with an empathetic and community-focused tone;
Familiarity with local perinatal health systems and community resources in Ottawa;
Experience facilitating workshops or support groups is an asset; and
Preference will be given to applicants who are members of Black and/or racialized communities.
