SCOPE Reporting to the Engineer in Residence, the incumbent provides support, guidance and instruction with engineering concepts, testing, assembly and manufacturing to students, staff and faculty with hardware projects, including capstone, research and extra-curricular in MIAE To develop projects and new lab experiments and to be responsible for continuous improvement and quality within assigned courses and activities. Supports design projects from feasibility, technical development and detailed design phases. Responsible for providing mechanical and aerospace engineering technological expertise to faculty, staff and students as well as ensuring the efficient and safe operations of multiple teaching and research laboratory spaces.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Interact with and guide students on engineering and design concepts, questions, and ideas, particularly for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Aerospace Capstone Design Course. • Support the capstone engineering project courses. • Support, extra-curricular student teams and ensure safety of all extra-curricular projects, activities, and space usage. • Liaise with departmental and interdepartmental faculty and staff to develop and maintain Mechanical and Aerospace-related facilities, including with Building Operations and Infrastructure and the Facilities Management Team. • Support lab-related activities, including development, creation, construction, and renovations. • Operate departmental lab facilities. Keep track of space usage and provide statistics. • Manage the procurement of laboratory supplies, equipment, and software as needed. • Liaise with instructors teaching aerospace courses, particularly those with design projects and labs. • Formulate engineering projects for new and existing courses in aerospace engineering. • Initiate and develop projects related to new lab experiments and research activities in Aerospace. • Identify opportunities for improving laboratory operations and efficiency. Research and evaluate new equipment and technologies. • Provide support to research-related technical requests. Ensure safety compliance in various research labs. • Ensure verification of drawings for accuracy, review test plans, and coordinate testing activities. • Support teams and technical staff working in department labs and on department-related projects. • Support the department health and safety officer and ensure that all lab facilities meet all health and safety regulations and requirements. Liaise with EHS and CSPS . • Liaise with other departments to improve the overall engineering experience. • Take part in the organization of Capstone design events and design reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Aerospace Engineering and four to seven years related experience in aerospace. • Strong theoretical and technical background in engineering. • Working knowledge of computer-aided design software (e.g. Solidworks, CATIA). • Strong theoretical and technical background in aerospace design in Canada, preferably in Quebec. • Familiarity with manufacturing processes related to Aerospace. • Experience with testing engineering systems in Aerospace. • Ability to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and resolve technical challenges. • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French. • Good knowledge (Intermediate Level) of Word, Excel and MSTeams. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Ability to foster a positive team environment. • Self-starter with strong analytical with strong problem-solving skills. • Dedication to providing exceptional customer service and foster a positive team environment. • Adaptability to a dynamic academic environment • Experience with wind tunnels, material testing equipment, FEA software, etc an asset. • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation an asset. • Prior experience working with students an asset. • Technical degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Technology an asset. • Experienced with powered hydraulic systems an asset. • Hands-on experience with fabrication techniques (e.g., machining, welding, 3D printing) an asset.
