The Department of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Forest Planning and Development Technician position with the Forestry and Peatlands Branch in Winnipeg.

Duties:

Reporting to the Timber Administration Lead, the Forest Planning and Development Technician supports the Timber Administration Lead in the tracking and reporting of Crown timber harvested throughout Manitoba. The position also supports field operations related to scaling, peatlands management, and forestry operations, as they pertain to the managment of Crown forests and provincial peatlands.

Qualifications:

Essential:

• Post-secondary education in forestry, natural resource management or other environmental science discipline. An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered.
• Experience working in forestry and/or peatlands field operations, including forest inventory, tree mapping, scaling, audits, damage appraisals, and/or related fieldwork.
• Experience collecting, compiling, reviewing, and analyzing data.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with various stakeholders.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and/or ArcGIS Online or similar software applications.
• Proficiency working with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
• Experience using vehicles and equipment related to forestry and/or peatlands operations.
• Experience identifying forest trees, shrubs, insects, and diseases.

Desired:

• Knowledge and/or experience working with The Forest Act and Regulations or other Manitoba natural resource legislation and policies.

Conditions of Employment:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

• Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence
• Must be willing and able to work overtime when required (including evenings and weekends), and work out-of-town for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels, and tents
• Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via trucks, all-terrain vehicles, boats, and by rotary or fixed wing aircrafts
• Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including carrying equipment and forestry or peat samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions
• Must be able to work in environments where exposure to non-hazardous materials or substances with strong odours may occur (e.g., smudging sage, sweetgrass)
