Staff Software Developer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Developer based in Canada. As a Staff Software Developer, you’ll remain deeply hands-on while taking broad technical ownership across complex engineering challenges. You’ll design scalable, performant systems and solve difficult production issues across distributed environments. The role combines substantial coding with technical leadership, mentorship, and cross-team influence. You’ll work closely with product, design, and engineering partners to deliver reliable, customer-focused solutions. You’ll also use AI-enabled engineering practices, automation, and data-informed debugging to improve development velocity and system reliability. This is an opportunity to shape technical direction while staying close to the code and delivering high-impact software at scale. Accountabilities - Own complex technical challenges and architect scalable, reliable, and performant solutions across the product and platform. - Write and maintain high-quality production code using technologies such as Go, Scala, TypeScript, React, and GraphQL. - Diagnose complex production issues across distributed systems, identify root causes, and implement durable fixes that improve reliability and customer trust. - Partner with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate customer and business needs into effective technical solutions. - Apply AI-enabled engineering techniques, intelligent tooling, automation, and data-driven debugging to solve complex problems and accelerate delivery. - Lead by example through thoughtful code reviews, technical guidance, mentoring, and strong development and testing practices. - Identify and implement improvements across the codebase, architecture, developer workflows, performance, and operational processes.

- Collaborate across engineering teams to promote consistency in implementation, performance, reliability, and user experience. - Help unblock teammates by sharing technical context, reviewing designs, and creating reusable tools, libraries, and frameworks. - Contribute to observability, scalability, and operational excellence across systems using logging, tracing, metrics, and alerting practices. Requirements - Significant professional experience as a software engineer, with a strong track record of building and operating production systems at scale. - Demonstrated Staff Engineer or Tech Lead-level experience, or equivalent technical leadership through complex engineering initiatives. - Deep expertise in system design, clean coding practices, debugging, and solving challenging technical problems. - Strong hands-on development experience with one or more relevant technologies, particularly Go, Scala, TypeScript, React, or GraphQL. - Experience addressing performance bottlenecks, scalability challenges, and reliability issues in high-traffic or distributed systems. - Familiarity with observability and monitoring technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Datadog, or equivalent tools. - Experience building developer tooling, frameworks, libraries, or automation that improves engineering productivity. - Practical experience applying AI tools and techniques to software development, debugging, automation, or complex engineering problem-solving. - Ability to work effectively with product, design, and engineering stakeholders and communicate technical concepts clearly. - Strong mentoring skills, including pairing with developers, sharing technical knowledge, and providing constructive feedback through code and design reviews. - Ability to independently lead complex projects from conception through production while maintaining a high standard of technical quality. - Familiarity with cloud and infrastructure technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, and Kafka is valuable.
